Putin Makes Surprise Visit to Chechnya, Compares Ukrainian Incursion to Beslan Massacre

Russian President Vladimir Putin made a surprise visit to Chechnya on Tuesday, during which he compared Ukraine’s recent incursion into Russia’s Kursk region to the tragic 2004 Beslan school massacre. The Beslan siege, carried out by Chechen militants, resulted in the deaths of over 330 people, including many children.

During his visit, Putin paid tribute to the victims at memorials in Beslan, marking his first visit to the site in nearly two decades. He met with mothers who lost children in the attack and drew parallels between the Chechen militants responsible for the Beslan tragedy and what he described as Ukraine’s attempts to destabilize Russia.

Referring to Ukraine’s recent cross-border actions in the Kursk region, Putin stated that Russia faces similar threats today as it did during the Beslan siege. He vowed to “punish the criminals” responsible and reiterated his government’s commitment to addressing what it views as external threats to national security.

The Beslan school siege, which took place in September 2004, ended with a violent confrontation between Russian special forces and the militants. Despite the passage of time, the incident remains a painful memory in Russia, and Putin’s visit underscores the ongoing tension between Russia and Ukraine.
