ISLAMABAD: Federal Interior Minister Mohsin Naqvi has called for comprehensive governance reforms, stronger administrative efficiency, and structural changes aimed at improving public service delivery, saying that sustainable economic progress cannot be achieved without transparent and effective governance.
Addressing the Economic Forum in Islamabad, the Interior Minister emphasized that Pakistan’s future economic stability depends not only on fiscal measures but also on strengthening institutions, improving governance, and ensuring that the benefits of development reach ordinary citizens.
He stressed that efficient governance remains a key requirement for attracting investment, promoting industrial growth, and restoring public confidence in state institutions.
The minister underlined the importance of administrative reforms and highlighted the need to examine the country’s administrative structure to improve service delivery. He observed that better governance and efficient administration are essential for addressing the economic and social challenges confronting Pakistan.
Economic experts have long argued that governance reforms, institutional transparency, and accountability are critical for overcoming structural weaknesses in the economy. Pakistan continues to face significant challenges, including high energy costs, inflationary pressures, declining industrial competitiveness, and a growing debt burden.
Industrial stakeholders have repeatedly expressed concern that rising electricity and gas tariffs have increased production costs, affecting exports and limiting the competitiveness of local industries. Many businesses have urged the government to introduce reforms that reduce the cost of doing business while improving regulatory efficiency.
The Interior Minister’s remarks have renewed debate over broader governance reforms, including proposals to strengthen administrative institutions and improve the effectiveness of public administration. Analysts believe that efficient governance, policy continuity, and institutional stability are essential ingredients for long-term economic growth.
Naqvi also highlighted the importance of ensuring that government institutions function transparently and efficiently in order to restore public trust and create an enabling environment for economic development.
Observers note that successive governments have faced criticism over governance challenges, bureaucratic inefficiencies, and delays in implementing structural reforms. They argue that strengthening local institutions, improving administrative capacity, and ensuring accountability can contribute significantly to better public service delivery.
Policy experts further maintain that empowering local governments and decentralizing administrative responsibilities could help improve governance by bringing decision-making closer to citizens while promoting balanced regional development.
The forum also discussed Pakistan’s economic potential, with participants emphasizing that the country possesses considerable human resources, strategic geographic importance, and industrial capacity. However, they noted that realizing this potential requires policy consistency, institutional reforms, improved governance, and a business-friendly environment.
Participants stressed that economic recovery should remain focused on creating employment opportunities, encouraging domestic and foreign investment, strengthening industries, and reducing the financial burden on ordinary citizens.
The Interior Minister reaffirmed the government’s commitment to improving governance and administrative performance, expressing confidence that institutional reforms would contribute to stronger economic growth and greater public welfare.
Analysts believe that if governance reforms are implemented effectively alongside economic measures, Pakistan could strengthen investor confidence, improve public service delivery, and create the foundation for sustainable and inclusive economic development.
