A glimpse of changing governance in Punjab

In Punjab’s politics, the name Nawaz is no longer just a name; it is increasingly taking the shape of a practical narrative. Upon assuming office as Chief Minister, Maryam Nawaz clearly conveyed that the true purpose of government is public service, transparency, and immediate relief. For years, there have been complaints about a governance vacuum, mismanagement, and indifference. Several of Maryam Nawaz’s decisions appear to be sincere attempts to fill this gap. Although her initiatives are still in the early stages, their direction and intent are clearly aligned with public interest.
One of the most important decisions relates to improving the healthcare sector. Ensuring the provision of free medicines in government hospitals is a step that directly benefits poor patients. In the past, despite medicines being allocated in budgets, they often failed to reach patients. Now, efforts are being made to address this issue by improving monitoring systems. Transparency and accountability in the health system are among Maryam Nawaz’s top priorities, which is a welcome development.
Her decisions in the education sector are also commendable. The poor condition of government schools has long been a national issue. Problems such as teacher absenteeism, lack of basic facilities, and declining educational standards are now being addressed in a practical manner. School upgradation, strict monitoring of teachers’ attendance, and the provision of facilities for students are measures that can shape the province’s future in the long run. In particular, the emphasis on girls’ education is a decision that lays the foundation for social development.
In terms of cleanliness and the environment, the “Suthra Punjab” program reflects Maryam Nawaz’s pro-people vision. Garbage, filth, and inadequate waste management have been major issues not only in cities but also in rural areas. Under this program, efforts are underway to organize sanitation systems, monitor staff, and adopt modern methods. A clean environment is not just about beauty; it is also a guarantee of a healthy society.
Decisions made for women distinguish Maryam Nawaz from other rulers. Skill-development programs, easy loan facilities, and protective measures aimed at making women economically independent are extremely important. A society in which women are empowered is the one that truly moves toward progress. These initiatives are an effort to provide women with real support rather than limiting empowerment to slogans.
Measures against inflation are also of particular importance at the public level. Controlling prices of essential commodities, taking action against profiteering, and decisions like Ramadan relief packages may provide temporary relief, but they are significant for the common person. If these measures are made part of a permanent policy, inflationary pressure can be reduced to some extent.
Farmer-friendly policies are also included among Maryam Nawaz’s pro-people decisions. Farmers are the backbone of Pakistan’s economy, yet unfortunately they have often been neglected. Better decisions regarding wheat procurement and agricultural facilities are attempts to support the rural economy. If farmers prosper, food supply will remain stable and inflation may also decrease.
Activating institutions like the Punjab Performance Unit to improve governance and efficiency is another important decision. Evaluating the performance of government officers, setting targets, and making decisions based on results are hallmarks of modern governance. If this system is kept free from political interference, it could change the standard of governance in Punjab.
However, it is also essential to remember that the true test of public decisions unfolds over time. If intentions and direction are right, results do emerge, but this requires continuity, transparency, and impartial implementation. If Maryam Nawaz’s decisions continue with the same pace and sincerity, the people of Punjab may truly feel a real change. If her decisions so far do not remain limited to announcements but become ground realities, they could set a new example of governance in Punjab.
The public is watching the fairness of implementation closely, and this process will be the real test of Maryam Nawaz’s politics. Our prayer is that Allah grants her success, and that the example of the best governance by a woman is always remembered in Pakistan’s history.
