Balochistan Teen Zunaira Qayyum Appointed UNICEF Youth Advocate for Pakistan

ISLAMABAD: Fourteen-year-old Zunaira Qayyum from Balochistan has been named UNICEF’s Youth Advocate for Climate Action and Girls’ Empowerment in Pakistan, recognizing her outstanding contributions to climate advocacy and child rights.

Her appointment was announced during the “Breathe Pakistan Climate Conference,” where she was celebrated for her efforts in raising awareness about climate change and its impact on children, particularly in underserved communities.

Zunaira has represented Pakistan’s youth at both national and international platforms, including COP 29. Her research on the effects of climate change-induced floods on girls’ secondary education in Hub, Balochistan, was among the winning entries in UNICEF’s Policy Research Challenge 2023.

Passionate about advocacy, she has also been instrumental in training adolescents in her hometown, using UNICEF’s Youth Advocacy Guide to educate and empower young people on policy engagement, research, and campaign-building.

UNICEF Representative Applauds Zunaira’s Efforts

Abdullah Fadil, UNICEF’s Representative in Pakistan, praised Zunaira’s work, stating:

“The climate crisis is one of the greatest challenges we face. However, when I listen to Zunaira and the children of Pakistan, I find hope and inspiration for the future.”

He emphasized the need for more initiatives to empower young people, enabling them to take leadership roles in addressing environmental and social issues.

Children in Pakistan Facing Climate Crisis

Zunaira’s appointment comes at a crucial time, as Pakistan’s children are increasingly vulnerable to climate change and extreme weather events like floods, droughts, and heatwaves. These environmental challenges not only threaten lives but also disrupt education.

A recent UNICEF analysis revealed that climate-related hazards disrupted schooling for 26 million children across Pakistan in 2024, with 16 million affected by air pollution in Punjab alone.

Through her new role, Zunaira aims to amplify young voices, advocate for sustainable solutions, and work towards a future where children are protected from the devastating effects of climate change.
