PESHAWAR: The death toll of security personnel in the Kurram convoy attack rose to two after another injured soldier succumbed to his wounds, officials confirmed on Friday. The deadly attack on a convoy delivering essential supplies to the crisis-hit Kurram district on Thursday also claimed the lives of three civilian drivers, with five drivers still missing.
According to police reports, the assailants ambushed the aid convoy, looted goods, and set the trucks ablaze. In the retaliatory response, security forces reportedly killed six attackers.
Security and Damage
Kurram Additional Deputy Commissioner Shaukat Ali said the attack damaged three vehicles in the convoy. Despite a comprehensive security deployment that included police, Frontier Corps (FC), and other agencies, the convoy faced significant losses.
The convoy was part of a third-phase effort to deliver critical supplies like medicines, vegetables, and fruits to the conflict-affected region. Following the attack, authorities halted further deliveries and redirected the remaining convoy to ensure safety.
Humanitarian and Security Crisis
The attack marks a major setback for the fragile peace process in Kurram, where recent tribal violence claimed over 130 lives and led to a 100-day blockade. A peace deal, brokered by the Grand Jirga, Kurram Peace Committee, and local groups, had reopened aid routes, but the fragile security environment continues to threaten stability.
Residents expressed frustration over inadequate aid deliveries and the suspension of helicopter medical evacuation services for over 10 days. Despite recent peace agreements, the district remains tense, highlighting the challenges of maintaining security and delivering humanitarian relief in a volatile environment.
