ECP Suspends Membership of 139 Lawmakers Over Failure to Submit Annual Returns

ISLAMABAD: The Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) on Thursday suspended the membership of 139 lawmakers, including members of the Senate, National Assembly, and provincial assemblies, for failing to submit their annual returns of assets and liabilities for the fiscal year 2023-24.

According to the ECP’s notification, the suspended members include:

  • 2 senators,
  • 16 National Assembly members,
  • 68 Punjab Assembly members,
  • 33 Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Assembly members,
  • 15 Sindh Assembly members, and
  • 5 members from the Balochistan Assembly.

The suspended lawmakers are barred from participating in legislative proceedings until they fulfill their statutory obligation under Section 137 of the Elections Act, 2017, which mandates all members to file yearly statements of assets and liabilities by December 31.

Prominent Suspended Lawmakers

Some of the notable suspended members include:

  • Senators Abdul Qadoos and Muhammad Qasim,
  • MNAs Tahir Iqbal, Syed Ali Gilani, Mudassir Sehar Kamran,
  • Sardar Akhtar Mengal, who had already resigned as an MNA.

Legal Consequences

The suspension will be lifted once the members submit the required returns. The annual filing of asset details is a critical measure to ensure transparency and accountability among public representatives. The ECP takes action each year against non-compliant lawmakers, reinforcing the legal obligation and promoting financial disclosure.
