Manzar Naqvi

During the recent visit of the Pakistan Media Delegation to China, we had the opportunity to tour the offices of Economic Daily and CEN. President of CEN, Cui Jun, provided a comprehensive briefing on each section of the organization. At the conclusion of our tour, we presented Cui Jun with a Jinnah Cap, a Sindhi Ajrak, and special editions of The Financial Daily commemorating the 100th anniversary of the CPC, and my second book on China, Amazing China.

During the briefing, we were informed that as the media landscape continues to evolve, the demand for skilled economic journalists who can effectively analyze and communicate complex financial issues has never been greater. In response, both Economic Daily and China Economic Net (CEN) have taken proactive steps to cultivate a new generation of journalists equipped to tackle the challenges of modern media. Through a variety of professional development programs, these institutions are not only preserving their legacy of high-quality journalism but also empowering young reporters to become leaders in economic reporting.

.The Importance of Professional Development in Economic Journalism
Economic journalism is a highly specialized field that requires a deep understanding of economic theories, business practices, and government policies. Unlike other areas of reporting, economic journalists need to interpret complex financial data, understand market trends, and assess the impact of government policies on industries and citizens. To meet these demands, it is essential that journalists have continuous access to professional development opportunities that sharpen their skills and keep them up to date with the latest economic developments.
Recognizing this need, Economic Daily and CEN have established comprehensive training programs that not only focus on economic knowledge but also emphasize digital media, data journalism, and ethical reporting. These programs are designed to help young journalists navigate the rapidly changing media environment while upholding the highest standards of accuracy, integrity, and professionalism.

Fostering the Next Generation of Economic Reporters at Economic Daily
As one of China’s leading economic newspapers, Economic Daily has a long history of setting the benchmark for economic reporting. Over the years, the paper has built a reputation for its in-depth analysis of economic policies, industry trends, and market movements. To maintain this standard and foster a new generation of economic journalists, Economic Daily has developed several initiatives aimed at providing young reporters with the training and experience they need to excel.

1. Comprehensive Internship Programs
One of the cornerstones of Economic Daily’s efforts to cultivate new talent is its internship program, which provides hands-on experience to aspiring journalists. Interns at Economic Daily are immersed in the day-to-day workings of the newsroom, learning how to gather and analyze economic data, conduct interviews with policymakers and business leaders, and write compelling articles on complex financial topics.

Interns work under the mentorship of seasoned economic journalists and editors who guide them through the editorial process and help them refine their reporting skills. This on-the-job training is complemented by workshops and seminars that cover topics such as data journalism, digital storytelling, and ethical reporting, ensuring that interns develop a well-rounded skill set.

2. Workshops and Specialized Courses
In addition to its internship program, Economic Daily offers a range of workshops and specialized courses that focus on various aspects of economic journalism. These workshops, which are open to both full-time staff and interns, cover topics such as financial reporting, macroeconomic analysis, and trade policy. Led by industry experts, these sessions provide journalists with the tools they need to analyze complex economic issues and present them in a way that is accessible to a broad audience.

For example, recent workshops have focused on the implications of China’s Belt and Road Initiative (BRI) for global trade, the economic impact of digital currency, and strategies for reporting on China’s ambitious climate goals. By offering specialized training in emerging areas of economic journalism, Economic Daily ensures that its reporters are well-equipped to cover the latest developments in China’s rapidly evolving economy.

3. Mentorship and Career Development
Mentorship is another critical component of Economic Daily’s approach to professional development. Young journalists are paired with experienced mentors who provide guidance on everything from reporting techniques to navigating ethical dilemmas. This mentorship extends beyond day-to-day tasks, with senior journalists helping young reporters map out their career paths, identify their strengths, and work on areas of improvement

.
Moreover, Economic Daily offers opportunities for career advancement, with pathways that allow talented journalists to move into leadership roles, such as editors or columnists. This structured approach to career development ensures that young journalists are not only equipped with the skills they need but also have the support and resources to thrive in the competitive field of economic journalism.

CEN’s Digital-First Approach to Journalism Training
As a leading digital economic news platform, China Economic Net (CEN) is at the forefront of modern media. Unlike traditional newspapers, CEN operates primarily in the digital space, which requires its journalists to have a different set of skills, including proficiency in social media, mobile journalism, and multimedia reporting. To address these needs, CEN has implemented training programs that focus on digital storytelling and the use of technology in economic journalism.

1. Digital and Data Journalism Training
One of the key areas of focus for CEN’s professional development programs is data journalism. In the digital age, economic reporters must be able to analyze large sets of data and use that information to tell compelling stories. CEN offers training sessions that teach journalists how to collect, interpret, and visualize data in ways that make complex economic trends understandable to their audience.

For instance, CEN’s data journalism training covers topics such as using tools like Excel, Python, and visualization software to analyze financial reports, trade statistics, and government economic indicators. Journalists learn how to use data to support their reporting and create engaging visual content, such as infographics and interactive charts, that enhance the reader’s understanding of the economic issues at hand.

2. Multimedia and Mobile Journalism
CEN’s focus on multimedia journalism is another critical aspect of its training programs. Given that the platform operates primarily online, journalists at CEN must be proficient in creating content that works across multiple formats, including video, podcasts, and social media. To prepare its reporters for the demands of digital-first journalism, CEN offers training in video production, podcasting, and mobile reporting.

For example, journalists are trained to create short-form videos explaining key economic concepts or breaking down the implications of major policy announcements. Additionally, CEN encourages its journalists to engage with readers through social media platforms such as Weibo, Twitter, and LinkedIn, ensuring that they can communicate directly with a global audience.

3. Global Exposure and Partnerships
CEN’s international focus also plays a significant role in its training initiatives. By partnering with international media outlets and academic institutions, CEN provides its journalists with opportunities to gain global exposure and insights into how economic issues are reported in different parts of the world. These partnerships include exchange programs, where CEN reporters work with foreign news organizations to understand global perspectives on economic issues, as well as collaborations with universities to develop journalism curricula focused on international economics.

This global approach to training ensures that CEN’s journalists are not only equipped to report on China’s economy but also understand its place in the global economic landscape.
Preparing Journalists for Ethical Reporting

Both Economic Daily and CEN place a strong emphasis on ethics in journalism. Given the significant influence that economic reporting can have on markets, businesses, and government policy, it is essential that journalists maintain high ethical standards. To this end, both institutions offer ethics training as part of their professional development programs.

Journalists are trained to verify their sources, avoid conflicts of interest, and report on economic issues with objectivity and balance. These ethical guidelines are reinforced through regular workshops and editorial oversight, ensuring that all reporting meets the highest standards of integrity.

The professional development programs at Economic Daily and CEN are shaping the future of economic journalism in China. By offering comprehensive training in economic analysis, digital journalism, data reporting, and ethics, these institutions are empowering young journalists to navigate the complexities of modern media while upholding the highest standards of professionalism.

As China’s economy continues to evolve and its role in the global market expands, the need for skilled economic reporters will only grow. Through their commitment to training and development, Economic Daily and CEN are ensuring that the next generation of journalists is well-prepared to meet the demands of this dynamic field, helping to inform public discourse and contribute to a more informed, connected world.
