KARACHI: Some meetings last only a few moments, yet their warmth and fragrance remain in one’s heart and mind for years. My recent meeting with the Governor of Sindh, Syed Muhammad Nihal Hashmi, was one such memorable occasion. It reminded me once again that true greatness is defined not by position or authority, but by character, humility, and compassion.
I have known Syed Muhammad Nihal Hashmi since 2014, when he was serving as a Senator. Throughout these years, I have always found him to be a person who values relationships and treats people with respect and dignity. In recognition of my social and journalistic contributions, he twice recommended my name to the Government of Pakistan for a civil award. I have always regarded this as a gesture of his encouragement, kindness, and confidence in my work.
This was my first meeting with him after he assumed the office of Governor of Sindh. I expected nothing more than a formal handshake, but to my surprise, he stood up from his seat to welcome me, embraced me warmly, and inquired about my well-being with genuine affection. His gracious conduct reaffirmed my belief that high office does not make a person great; rather, true greatness belongs to those who remain humble, courteous, and compassionate even after attaining prestigious positions.
During our conversation, we reminisced about the past and exchanged views on various national and social issues. At the conclusion of our meeting, I requested an opportunity for a more detailed discussion in the near future. He graciously accepted my request and assured me that he would gladly allocate time for such a meeting. His positive attitude and courteous manner reflected a personality that values people and listens to them with respect.
I pray that Almighty Allah grants Syed Muhammad Nihal Hashmi good health, continued success, and steadfastness, enabling him to serve the people of Sindh and Pakistan with the same dedication, dignity, and commitment. Our society needs leaders who inspire not only through their office but also through their exemplary character and noble conduct. In my view, Syed Muhammad Nihal Hashmi is undoubtedly one of those distinguished personalities.
