The Directorate General of Immigration and Passports has initiated efforts to develop e-passport security chips within Pakistan, aiming to strengthen passport security and reduce reliance on foreign technology, according to a report by 24NewsHD TV on Tuesday.
The initiative was discussed at a virtual meeting chaired by the Director General of Immigration and Passports, attended by representatives of the Pakistan Security Printing Corporation (PSPC).
During the meeting, officials conducted a comprehensive review of the passport production process, covering printing operations, supply chain management and the timely availability of passport booklets. Discussions also focused on enhancing e-passport security features and ensuring compliance with internationally recognised security standards.
Participants further examined measures to improve the manufacturing quality of polycarbonate data cards, with particular emphasis on meeting international specifications and improving overall production standards.
The Director General instructed PSPC officials to coordinate with a team from the National University of Sciences and Technology (NUST) to explore practical measures for developing secure passport chips locally.
The proposed initiative reflects the government’s broader agenda of promoting digital transformation, strengthening domestic technological expertise and reducing dependence on imported security technology.
