Gulistan-e-Jauhar SHO Demoted After Assault on Lawyer

The station house officer (SHO) of Gulistan-e-Jauhar was suspended and demoted following an incident where he allegedly assaulted a lawyer, leading to prolonged clashes between law enforcement and lawyers at the police station.

The conflict began when senior lawyer and Sindh High Court (SHC) member, Qadir Rajpar, arrived at the police station with a client to execute a court order for the release of a vehicle. Rajpar accused the SHO and other officers of mistreating him and disregarding the court order. This prompted a large gathering of lawyers outside the station, resulting in road blockages.

Clashes and Injuries
A physical altercation ensued between the lawyers and police, with both sides reporting injuries. The police claimed that the lawyers attempted to force their way into the station, causing injuries to several officers. Conversely, the police reported that an unidentified individual, not in lawyer’s attire, entered the SHO’s room, refused to leave when asked, and verbally threatened the officers, leading to the arrival of more lawyers and the subsequent attack on the station’s gate.

Lawyer’s Account
Rajpar alleged that the SHO physically assaulted him, resulting in a broken finger and a head injury. He stated that he had come to the station with his client to resolve a custody dispute over a vehicle and had obtained an order from GM East for the vehicle’s release. However, the SHO allegedly ignored this order and mistreated Rajpar.

Case and Negotiations
Following the clash, senior police officials and representatives from the Karachi Bar Association, including President Amir Nawaz Warraich and General Secretary Ikhtiar Channa, entered negotiations. The bar association representatives demanded action against the SHO, who was subsequently suspended and demoted. Additionally, a case was filed against the SHO and his staff, including charges of terrorism, attempted murder, and torture, with over 15 policemen named in the case.

The lawyers continued their protest until they received a copy of the first information report (FIR). The police confirmed that the SHO had misbehaved with the lawyers, leading to the legal actions taken against him and his staff.

This incident highlights the ongoing tensions between law enforcement and the legal community, underscoring the need for adherence to legal protocols and mutual respect between the two groups.
