Imran Khan Denies Establishment Ties, Criticizes Current Leadership

Former Prime Minister and founder of Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI), Imran Khan, clarified on Monday that he currently has no contact with the establishment, emphasizing that any future discussions will only take place if they align with the nation’s interests. Speaking informally to the media after a court hearing at Rawalpindi’s Adiala Jail regarding the £190 million case, Imran underscored the importance of strong and independent institutions for the stability of Pakistan.

During his interaction with the media, Imran expressed deep concern over the actions being taken by the authorities, warning that these measures could severely destabilize the country. He criticized the use of coercive tactics, stating, “Only sheep and goats can be controlled with sticks, not humans. What they are doing is suicide.” His comments reflect his belief that the current approach of the authorities is not only ineffective but also potentially catastrophic for the nation.

Imran Khan also shed light on the harsh conditions he is enduring in jail, describing his confinement as being akin to living in an “oven.” Despite these conditions, he made it clear that he is not seeking any relief or special treatment. In addition to discussing his own situation, Imran took the opportunity to criticize the leadership of the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB), questioning the qualifications and integrity of Mohsin Naqvi, who he claims was appointed despite being implicated in a 2008 case by the National Accountability Bureau (NAB).

In a notable display of his enduring admiration for the Pakistan Army, Imran Khan stated, “People love the army because they defend us.” He drew a parallel with the historical events in Bangladesh, suggesting that when the people in Bangladesh rose up, they were asserting their rights—a subtle but pointed reminder of the power of the populace when they seek justice and equity.

During the court hearing, Imran Khan also expressed concern for his spouse, Bushra Bibi, who is also incarcerated at Adiala Jail. He informed the judge that her cell is infested with rats, a troubling situation that was confirmed by Bushra Bibi herself. The judge, in response, summoned jail officials to address the issue. Deputy Superintendent Tahir Siddique Shah, however, claimed they were unaware of the problem but assured the court that it would be resolved promptly.

The court proceedings were marked by the absence of defence lawyers, which resulted in the postponement of the cross-examination of witnesses for the 10th consecutive time. However, the court granted the defence another opportunity to cross-examine the witnesses. The hearing of the case was adjourned until August 29, leaving the legal battle and the broader political implications hanging in the balance.
