Karachi Police Equip 50 Mobile Units with ANPR Cameras for Enhanced Surveillance

KARACHI: The Karachi police have taken a major step in crime prevention by installing Automatic Number Plate Recognition (ANPR) cameras in 50 police mobile units as part of the Community Policing Karachi (CPK) project. This initiative aims to enhance real-time vehicle identification and tracking, significantly improving security measures ahead of Ramadan.

Key Features of ANPR Camera System

  • Real-time Identification: Scans vehicle number plates and cross-checks records within 30 seconds.
  • Stolen Vehicle Detection: If a stolen car is detected, the system alerts officers with an audible beep.
  • Integration with Talash App: Allows officers to verify fingerprints and check criminal records in real time.
  • Link with AVLC Records: The system is connected with the Anti-Vehicle Lifting Cell (AVLC) for efficient crime tracking.
  • Instant Owner Information: Displays registered owner details, helping police in rapid investigations.

Implementation Across Karachi

  • The ANPR system is already operational in multiple locations, including Defence, New Sabzi Mandi, Azizabad, and Soldier Bazaar, along with 16 police stations.
  • 50 additional mobile units will be equipped this week, extending surveillance coverage citywide.

Expected Impact

The introduction of ANPR cameras in police vehicles is anticipated to:

  • Reduce vehicle theft and snatching incidents.
  • Improve response time in criminal investigations.
  • Enhance overall law enforcement efficiency through real-time data access.

With this initiative, Karachi police are leveraging technology to strengthen public safety and crime prevention efforts in the city.
