Maryam Approves Solar Panels for Low to Moderate Electricity Consumers

In response to the rising electricity costs, Punjab Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz has approved the provision of solar panels for individuals consuming between 50 and 500 units of electricity monthly. During a meeting of the Energy Department on Monday, she gave the go-ahead for the provincial government’s ‘Roshan Gharana Programme.’

CM Maryam Nawaz announced, “The Punjab government will provide solar systems to millions of consumers using 50 to 500 units of electricity, covering 90% of the solar panel cost, with the remaining 10% to be paid by the consumers.” She added that beneficiaries could pay the government-covered amount in easy installments over five years.

A cabinet meeting has been scheduled for Tuesday to formally approve the ‘Roshan Gharana’ programme. The initial phase will prioritize the poorest families, ensuring a transparent distribution of solar systems. Maryam Nawaz emphasized that the instalment of solar panels would be less in winter, and the panels would be supplied solely by the government. She noted, “The ratio between government electricity and solar system electricity will be determined based on users’ needs.”

Security Measures and Muharram Preparations

On Monday, CM Maryam Nawaz also chaired a meeting of the provincial apex committee, attended by senior officials including the corps commander Lahore, chief secretary Punjab, and IG Police. The meeting reviewed the security situation and measures to ensure public safety and national security in line with the revised National Action Plan.

The forum discussed the security arrangements for foreign nationals, particularly Chinese employees working on CPEC and non-CPEC projects, and developed a comprehensive security plan for Muharram processions, incorporating high-tech monitoring and tiered security forces deployment.

Additionally, the committee examined flood monitoring mechanisms for the monsoon season and discussed short- and long-term measures to protect people and livestock, including rescue and relief plans.
