Punjab police successfully repelled a coordinated militant attack on the Jhangi checkpost in Dera Ghazi Khan late Friday night, forcing the assailants to flee after an intense exchange of fire.
Attack and Response
According to a police spokesperson, 15 to 20 heavily armed terrorists targeted the checkpoint, located within the jurisdiction of Vahowa police station, under the cover of darkness. The attackers used rocket launchers, hand grenades, and advanced weaponry, aiming to overpower the security forces.
However, police forces swiftly retaliated, preventing the attackers from breaching the post and compelling them to retreat. No casualties were reported on the police side.
A massive search operation has been launched in the surrounding areas to track down the fleeing militants.
Security Officials Lead the Operation
The operation was personally led by RPO Dera Ghazi Khan, Captain (retd) Sajjad Hassan Khan Manj, along with DPO Syed Ali. Security has been heightened in the region, with reinforcements deployed to prevent further threats.
Rising Wave of Terrorism in Pakistan
The attack comes amid a surge in terrorism across Pakistan, despite continuous efforts by security agencies to suppress militant activity.
According to the CRSS Annual Security Report 2024, last year was the deadliest for Pakistan’s security forces in a decade, with:
- 685 fatalities and 444 terror attacks targeting security personnel.
- 1,612 civilian and security personnel deaths, a 73 percent increase compared to previous years.
- Khyber Pakhtunkhwa (KP) recorded the highest casualties (1,616), followed by Balochistan (782).
- November 2024 was the deadliest month, averaging seven fatalities per day.
Pakistan witnessed a staggering 2,546 violence-related deaths and 2,267 injuries in 2024, resulting from 1,166 incidents of terror attacks and counter-terror operations.
The increasing frequency and intensity of attacks raise serious concerns about the country’s internal security and the evolving threat posed by militant groups.
