KARACHI: The 556th birth anniversary of Baba Guru Nanak Dev Ji, the revered founder of Sikhism, was celebrated across Pakistan and around the world on November 5 with deep reverence, prayers, and messages of unity and peace. The day marked another occasion where Pakistan reaffirmed its dedication to interfaith harmony and protection of religious minorities.
Prime Minister Muhammad Shehbaz Sharif, in his official message, extended warm felicitations to the Sikh community in Pakistan and abroad, emphasizing that Baba Guru Nanak Dev Ji’s life and teachings were a guiding light for all humanity. “Baba Guru Nanak Dev Ji is not only one of the prominent figures in Sikhism but also a visionary who taught the entire humanity the values of peace, equality, tolerance, and understanding,” the Prime Minister said in a statement issued by the PM Office Media Wing.
He highlighted that Guru Nanak’s eternal principles of love, selfless service, and interfaith harmony continue to inspire generations. “His message of unity, solidarity, and tolerance serves as a beacon for establishing a peaceful and justice-based world,” he said.
The Prime Minister reiterated that the Government of Pakistan was firmly committed to protecting the rights of all religious minorities and ensuring the safety of their sacred sites. “In line with this commitment, the government ensures the protection of their sacred places and provides every possible facility to the visiting pilgrims to pay their respects,” he added.
Shehbaz Sharif noted that it was a matter of pride for Pakistan to be the guardian of many Gurdwaras linked with the life and teachings of Baba Guru Nanak, especially the Gurdwara Janam Asthan in Nankana Sahib. Every year, Pakistan welcomes thousands of Sikh pilgrims from around the world to these holy places, offering them hospitality and all necessary facilities.
Festivities across the country included special prayers, community meals (langar), and processions at major Gurdwaras. Nankana Sahib, the birthplace of Baba Guru Nanak, remained the focal point of celebrations, drawing pilgrims from India, the United Kingdom, Canada, and other countries. The Kartarpur Corridor also witnessed a large influx of visitors, symbolizing Pakistan’s commitment to promoting peace and religious harmony.
Religious scholars, diplomats, and members of the Sikh community praised the government’s efforts in maintaining and preserving Sikh heritage sites. They expressed gratitude for Pakistan’s gesture of goodwill and hospitality, underscoring that such initiatives strengthen the bonds of friendship and mutual respect among communities.
As the world faces rising divisions and intolerance, the teachings of Baba Guru Nanak Dev Ji – centered on compassion, equality, and unity – hold enduring relevance. His universal message continues to remind humanity that peace begins with understanding, and harmony flourishes where respect transcends boundaries.
