KARACHI: Pakistan has once again urged the international community to take concrete action for a just and peaceful resolution of the Jammu and Kashmir dispute, warning that Indian intransigence poses a grave threat to regional stability.
In a strong message on Kashmir Black Day, Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Muhammad Ishaq Dar said the dispute must be resolved in line with the United Nations Security Council resolutions, which guarantee the Kashmiri people their right to self-determination.
“Pakistan reaffirms its unwavering political, moral, and diplomatic support to the just struggle of Kashmiri people,” he stated. “Their plight deserves not only attention but meaningful action.”
Dar recalled the “dark day” of October 27, 1947, when Indian forces landed in Srinagar to enforce what he called the “illegal occupation” of Jammu and Kashmir. He said that for 78 years, the people of Indian Illegally Occupied Jammu and Kashmir (IIOJK) have endured a relentless campaign of oppression, human rights violations, and demographic manipulation.
He strongly condemned India’s August 5, 2019, actions that revoked the region’s special status, imposed draconian laws, arrested Kashmiri leadership, and initiated policies aimed at changing the demography of the territory. “These measures reflect India’s utter disregard for the UN Charter and international law,” Dar said.
The Deputy Prime Minister also highlighted the latest crackdown in the occupied region, in which thousands of Kashmiris have reportedly been detained, and homes demolished following the Pahalgam attack.
He stressed that the Kashmir conflict is not just a bilateral issue but an international dispute that requires urgent attention. “The world must recognize that peace in South Asia will remain fragile until this decades-old dispute is resolved,” he added.
Diplomatic observers say Pakistan’s renewed push on the Kashmir issue comes at a time of heightened regional tensions. Islamabad has urged the international community, particularly the United Nations, to pressure India into respecting UNSC resolutions and ending its repressive measures in IIOJK.
Pakistan maintains that a lasting peace can only be achieved through a free and impartial plebiscite allowing the people of Jammu and Kashmir to decide their future.
