PML-N Rejects PTI’s Demand to Cancel October 15 Protest Amid SCO Summit

The Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) has dismissed the conditions set by Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) to call off its planned protest on October 15, which coincides with the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation (SCO) summit in Islamabad. The ruling coalition, including the Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP), had urged PTI to reconsider the protest, given the significance of the international event that will see 200 delegations attending from across the region.

PTI spokesperson Sheikh Waqas Akram, speaking on Geo News, offered that if a brief meeting between PTI’s founding chairman Imran Khan and his family or doctors is allowed, the protest could be averted. He claimed the party leadership is concerned about Khan’s health and has been denied access to meet him since October 3. PTI also wrote to the Ministry of Interior, requesting an official meeting with Khan.

Despite internal disagreements within the party about the protest, PTI remains firm on its stance. Some leaders, like Barrister Gohar Ali Khan and Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Chief Minister Ali Amin Gandapur, opposed the rally, while others, including Hammad Azhar and Salman Akram Raja, supported going ahead with it.

PML-N leader Talal Chaudhry dismissed PTI’s demand, stating that Imran Khan is already enjoying regular meetings and VIP treatment in custody. He criticized the protest plan as an attempt to disrupt the SCO summit, which he emphasized is crucial for Pakistan’s economy and global standing. Chaudhry accused PTI of trying to blackmail the government, stating that the protest is merely a tactic to sabotage the high-profile event. He expressed doubts about PTI’s ability to follow through on its threats, downplaying the possibility of an actual demonstration.
