Prince Harry, set to arrive in the UK on September 30, reportedly engaged in significant discussions with a top British politician following his decision to step down from royal duties.
According to a new report, former British Prime Minister Boris Johnson urged the Duke of Sussex to remain in Britain and reconsider his 2020 decision to step back from royal life. In his upcoming memoir, Unleashed, Johnson reveals that he met with Harry on his final day as a working royal in January 2020.
A preview of the book, set to be serialized in the Daily Mail, describes how Johnson recalls being asked to give Harry “a manly pep talk” to convince him to stay, calling the effort “totally hopeless.” The 20-minute meeting occurred behind the scenes of the UK-Africa investment summit in London that month.
A friend noted that the conversation between Johnson and Harry was a private, man-to-man discussion, but by then, Harry had made up his mind and could not be persuaded.
Prior to the meeting, Harry had delivered a speech stating that he and Meghan Markle had “no other option” but to step back from royal duties after facing numerous challenges over the years. He clarified, “We’re not walking away, and we certainly aren’t walking away from you.”
On January 8, 2020, the Sussexes announced their decision to step down and become “financially independent.” While Meghan returned to Canada, Harry stayed behind for family discussions at the Sandringham Estate in Norfolk.
