Russian President Vladimir Putin made a significant and unexpected visit to Chechnya, a Muslim-majority region, on Wednesday, marking his first trip to the area in 13 years. The visit gained widespread attention after a video surfaced showing Putin kissing a gifted Quran and holding it close to his heart, a gesture of respect that resonated with many.
According to international news reports, Chechen leader Ramzan Kadyrov welcomed Putin warmly upon his arrival. The two leaders engaged in discussions focusing on strengthening military, trade, and economic ties, reflecting the strong relations between Russia and Chechnya.
This visit is notable as Putin’s first to Chechnya since 2011. The relationship between the two regions has been solid, with Kadyrov often describing Putin as a close friend in public statements.
During the visit, Putin, accompanied by Kadyrov and the Grand Mufti of Chechnya, visited the Isa Prophet Mosque in Grozny, the capital of Chechnya. At the mosque, Putin was presented with a rare edition of the Quran, which he kissed and held to his chest as a sign of respect.
The Grand Mufti also recited a verse from Surah Al-Anfal and provided a translation in Russian for Putin, adding a spiritual dimension to the visit.
