Tareen’s Sugar Mills Receive Largest Export Quota in Punjab

The Punjab government has issued an export quota of 96,000 tons of sugar to 41 sugar mills in the province, with the highest allocation awarded to mills owned by Jahangir Khan Tareen.

Both JDW Sugar Mills-I and JDW Sugar Mills-II, owned by Tareen, have been allotted an export quota of 10,783 tons. This allocation forms a significant portion of the total sugar export allowance from Punjab.

The quota allocation was based on the quantity of sugar produced by each mill rather than the sucrose recovery rate, according to a notification issued by the Cane Commissioner. The notification noted that if sucrose content recovery had been the basis for the quota allocation, Tareen’s mills would have received an even larger quota due to their high efficiency.

The Cane Commissioner’s notification, dated July 1, 2024, explained that data on sugarcane crushed and sugar produced during the 2023-24 crushing season was obtained from the Punjab Sugar Mills Association (Punjab Zone). The analysis revealed that sucrose content varies significantly across different areas of the province. Therefore, it was considered fair to allocate the export quota based on the amount of sugarcane crushed by each mill.

The notification detailed the export quotas for various mills, including:

Hamza Sugar Mills: 6,535 tons
Madina Sugar Mills: 3,790 tons
Ramadan Sugar Mills: 2,988 tons
Al-Arabia Sugar Mills: 1,660 tons
Ashraf Sugar Mills: 2,158 tons
Ittefaq Sugar Mills: 1,298 tons
Tandalianwala Sugar Mills: 3,447 tons
The Economic Coordination Council approved the export of a total of 150,000 metric tons of sugar under pressure from millers, a decision that came just two days before the national budget announcement.
