The Farewell Hajj of Rasulullah SAAW – Part 16

Mufti Saad Abdul Razzaq
The Umrah of Sayyidatuna Ayesha R.A from Tan’eem: Hadhrat Ayesha R.A expressed her desire to perform Umrah on the same night, as narrated in Bukhari by Hadhrat Jabir.
O Allah’s Messenger S.A.W! You are all returning with Hajj and ‘Umra except me”. (Sahih Bukhari, Hadith 1693, Pg. 633)
Subsequently, Rasulullah S.A.W instructed her brother, Hadhrat Abdul Rahman Ibn Abu Bakr R.A, to take Umm ul Mu’mineen to Tan’eem so that she may performed Umrah. Upon her return, Rasulullah S.A.W queried if she had completed her Umrah and when she informed Rasulullah S.A.W in the affirmative, Rasulullah S.A.W directed his Companions to depart for Madinah Munawwarah.
(Sahih Bukhari, Hadith 1696, Pg. 634)
The return journey
Returning from their journey, on the 14th of Zul Hijjah, after the Wednesday Fajr prayer, Rasulullah S.A.W departed from Makkah Mukarramah for his return to Madinah Munawwarah through Kadaa, the bottom section of Makkah Mukarramah, taking Zamzam water along. Hence, Imam Tirmizi has recorded the following practice of Umm ul Mu’mineen, Ayesha R.A:
Hadhrat Ayesha R.A used to carry Zamzam water with her, and she used to say that Rasulullah S.A.W would do the same.
(Sunan Tirmizi, Hadith 963, Pg. 174)
The sermon of Ghadeer Khum
Upon reaching Ghadeer Khum, Rasulullah S.A.W delivered a sermon, during which he extolled the virtues of Hadhrat Ali R.A and refuted objections some people from Yemen had against him.
The reason behind this was that Hadhrat Ali R.A had advocated justice and fairness in a certain matter, which some disagreed with and labelled as cruelty and miserliness. However, Hadhrat Ali R.A was just in his dealings with these people and he shared what transpired with Rasulullah S.A.W.
Hence, Rasulullah S.A.W clarified the matter and shared Hadhrat Ali’s R.A virtues, justice, and his close relationship with Rasulullah S.A.W, dispelling doubts in the hearts of many. (Hajjatul wada wa Umratun Nabi 206)
Under the chapter of ‘Status of Ali Ibn Talib’ in Mishkaat, Hadhrat Bara Ibn Aazib R.A and Hadhrat Zayd bin Arqam R.A narrates:
When Rasulullah S.A.W encamped at Ghadir Khum, (he gathered the companions) and held the hand of Hadhrat Ali R.A and asked, “Do you not know that I am closer to the believers than their own lives?” Everyone responded, “Certainly, indeed.”
Rasulullah S.A.W then continued, “Do you not know that I am closer to each believer than his own self?” The companions replied, “Certainly, indeed.”
Finally, Rasulullah S.A.W supplicated, “O Allah! Whoever befriends Ali, befriend him, and whoever opposes him, oppose him.” When Sayyiduna Umar R.A met with Hadhrat Ali R.A after this incident, he jubilantly congratulated him by saying, “O Ibn Abi Talib, congratulations! You have become the beloved friend of every believer”. (Mishkaatul Masaabih, H 6094, pg. 1723)
The Hajj of children
After departing from there, Rasulullah S.A.W arrived at Rauhah, where he and the companions encountered a group of horsemen. Hadhrat Ibn Abbas R.A narrates:
Rasulullah S.A.W departed and when he reached Rauha he encountered a group of horsemen, inquiring about their identity, he asked, “Who are you?” They replied, “We are Muslims.” Curious, they inquired in return, “And who are you?” To this, they were informed, “We are the messengers of the messenger of Allah.” At that moment, a woman emerged holding a child and inquired if Hajj can be performed by him (i.e. by the child). Rasulullah S.A.W affirmed, “Yes, and you will be rewarded.” (Sunan Nasai, H 2644, pg. 644)
