A Visit To Pakistan House Ambassador Khalil Hashmi Building Bridges In Beijing

Manzar Naqvi

After visiting CSCEC’s under-construction site, our next stop was at our own home in Beijing-the residence of Pakistan’s Ambassador, Khalil Hashmi, at Pakistan House.

In the heart of Beijing, Pakistan House stands as a symbol of enduring diplomacy between Pakistan and China. Recently, a memorable event unfolded at this esteemed residence, where the Pakistan Embassy, led by Ambassador Khalil Hashmi, welcomed our delegation. The gathering was arranged by the China Economic Net (CEN), a pivotal organization in the media landscape, under the leadership of Ms. Yin Yanan. The evening, enriched by engaging conversations and a sumptuous dinner, served not only as a cultural exchange but also as an affirmation of the deep-rooted friendship between Pakistan and China.

Ambassador Khalil Hashmi, who assumed his role as Pakistan’s envoy to China on November 11, 2023, hosted the event. Prior to his current appointment, Ambassador Hashmi served as the Permanent Representative of Pakistan to the United Nations, representing the country in numerous international forums, including the Conference on Disarmament in Geneva. His extensive diplomatic experience includes postings at various key locations such as Copenhagen, New York, and Beijing, where he has twice represented Pakistan at the United Nations and in other crucial bilateral capacities.

Upon our arrival, we were graciously received by the embassy staff. The atmosphere of the evening was warm, reflecting the longstanding relationship between the two nations. Ambassador Hashmi, though delayed due to an ongoing meeting, joined us shortly after and gave us an insightful briefing on the mission of the Pakistan Embassy in Beijing, particularly its efforts in enhancing Sino-Pak ties. He highlighted the importance of people-to-people connections in diplomacy, recognizing that personal relationships foster greater understanding and cooperation between nations.

Ambassador Hashmi expressed his gratitude to the delegation and commended the work of CEN, whose contributions in covering China’s economic growth have been instrumental in fostering a better understanding between Pakistan and China. The CEN team, led by Ms. Yin Yanan, has been at the forefront of covering China’s monumental economic transformation and its international partnerships, with Pakistan being a central focus.

The Ambassador elaborated on the embassy’s role in facilitating stronger connections between the citizens of both countries. He emphasized that while governmental ties are critical, the bond between Pakistan and China is deeply enriched by the mutual respect shared between their people. From cultural exchanges to educational collaborations, the embassy has been active in ensuring that these bridges remain strong.

Ambassador Hashmi’s leadership has introduced services and diplomatic efforts that the Pakistan Embassy had not seen before. His focus on strengthening people-to-people contacts and fostering cultural understanding has set a new precedent for the embassy’s work. Under his leadership, there has been a renewed focus on joint initiatives, student exchanges, and cultural events, all contributing to deepening the friendship between the two nations.

This focus on people-to-people ties is not just a reflection of Pakistan’s diplomatic approach but also a vital aspect of China’s international engagement strategy. Joint initiatives, student exchange programs, and projects under the Belt and Road Initiative (BRI) are central to these efforts, and Ambassador Hashmi’s remarks reminded us of how such soft diplomacy strengthens bilateral relations.

Our visit to Pakistan House was a testament to the deep ties between the two countries, extending beyond trade and politics to cultural, academic, and social realms. Ambassador Hashmi’s remarks acknowledged the significance of organizations like CEN in bridging the informational and cultural divide. CEN’s media presence ensures that stories of cooperation, development, and mutual respect are disseminated effectively.

The dinner served at the residence was not just a culinary delight but a metaphor for the rich, multi-faceted relationship between Pakistan and China. Every dish was a reminder of the diversity of our cultures, and the conversations around the table mirrored the historical and contemporary bonds tying our nations together. The food-a harmonious blend of Pakistani flavors-showcased the country’s rich culinary heritage.

As the evening drew to a close, a special presentation followed. I, as Secretary General of the Karachi Editors Club, along with Saeed Sarbazi, President of the Karachi Press Club, Shoaib Ahmed, Secretary of the Karachi Press Club, and the entire Pakistan Media Delegation, presented a Sindh Ajrak to Ambassador Khalil Hashmi as a token of our appreciation and respect. The Sindh Ajrak, a traditional symbol of Sindh’s rich cultural heritage, embodies friendship and hospitality, making it a fitting gesture for the evening.

Additionally, I had the honor of presenting copies of a special edition of The Financial Daily dedicated to the 100th anniversary of the Communist Party of China (CPC). This edition, featuring 100 quotations from President Xi Jinping, underscored the significance of China’s political leadership and its global influence. It was a tribute to the CPC’s monumental role in shaping modern China, and the presentation symbolized our recognition of this milestone in China’s history.

Ambassador Hashmi expressed his gratitude for these gestures and reaffirmed his commitment to further strengthening the bonds between Pakistan and China. His closing remarks emphasized the future trajectory of the relationship, particularly in the context of regional and global challenges. He reiterated Pakistan’s commitment to working closely with China in areas such as economic development, defense cooperation, and cultural exchange.

The visit to Pakistan House in Beijing was more than just an official engagement. It reflected the ongoing, evolving relationship between Pakistan and China, one marked by trust, respect, and a shared vision for the future. Ambassador Khalil Hashmi’s leadership, coupled with the efforts of the Pakistan Embassy and organizations like CEN, continues to pave the way for deeper cooperation between the two nations. As we left the residence that evening, we carried with us not only fond memories but also a renewed sense of purpose in contributing to the strengthening of Sino-Pak ties.

Ambassador Khalil Hashmi also provided a comprehensive briefing during the visit, offering valuable insights into the embassy’s work.
