DHAKA: Bangladesh international Shohely Akhter has been handed a five-year ban from all forms of cricket after admitting to multiple breaches of the ICC’s anti-corruption code, the sport’s governing body announced.
Akhter attempted to corrupt the game by offering £13,000 ($16,000) to a fellow Bangladeshi player to get out hit wicket during the Women’s T20 World Cup 2023 in South Africa. However, the unnamed player, who was part of the tournament, reported the approach, leading to an investigation.
Najmul Abedin Fahim, Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) director and head of the women’s wing, condemned Akhter’s actions, calling them “unfortunate.” He reaffirmed the board’s zero-tolerance policy toward corruption in cricket.

The 36-year-old spinner, who has represented Bangladesh in 13 T20Is and two ODIs, last played for the national side in 2022. She also admitted to delaying and obstructing the investigation into her actions.
This ban serves as a strong warning against corruption in cricket, reinforcing the ICC’s strict stance on maintaining the integrity of the sport.
