KARACHI: US President Donald Trump used his address to the United Nations General Assembly to deliver a forceful message on America’s global priorities, directing particularly tough remarks at Cuba and Iran while presenting Washington as prepared for diplomacy but equally willing to use its power to protect American interests.
Trump’s comments on Cuba triggered one of the most visible moments of protest during the session as the Cuban delegation walked out of the General Assembly hall in response to his remarks.
The US president sharply criticised the Cuban government and described the country as a failed state, while speaking of political change and a different future for the Cuban people. His remarks reflected Washington’s continuing confrontation with Havana despite indications that diplomatic contacts remain possible.
The walkout underlined the deep divisions between Washington and Havana, whose relations have remained strained for decades over US sanctions, Cuba’s political system, human rights and broader ideological differences.
Trump’s address, however, carried even greater significance in relation to Iran, where the stakes extend well beyond bilateral relations and involve the security of the entire Middle East.
The US president combined the possibility of negotiations and a future settlement with strong warnings over Tehran’s nuclear and regional policies. His remarks again raised the crucial question of whether Washington’s ultimate objective is to reach a negotiated agreement with Iran or maintain the option of further military confrontation if diplomacy fails.
Trump indicated that Iran could have an opportunity for reconstruction, economic development and prosperity if an agreement could be achieved. At the same time, he made clear that Washington remained prepared to respond forcefully if Tehran refused to meet American demands.
The contrasting messages – an opening for negotiations alongside warnings of potentially devastating consequences – highlighted the delicate stage of relations between the two countries.
Iran’s nuclear programme remains at the heart of the dispute. Washington and its allies have demanded verifiable assurances regarding Tehran’s nuclear activities, while Iran has repeatedly maintained that its nuclear programme serves peaceful purposes and has called for an end to US sanctions and pressure.
The wider implications of any renewed confrontation are considerable. An escalation involving Iran could affect Gulf security, international shipping routes, global energy supplies and oil prices, while also creating serious consequences for neighbouring states.
For Pakistan, stability between Iran and the United States carries particular importance. Pakistan shares a long border with Iran and has repeatedly supported diplomatic engagement and regional stability. Any major conflict involving Tehran could create security and economic challenges across the region and place additional pressure on countries already facing the consequences of prolonged instability in the Middle East.
Trump has repeatedly presented his foreign policy as one based on achieving peace through American strength. His UN address reflected that approach, combining calls for settlements with warnings that the United States would not hesitate to defend its interests.
The address nevertheless highlighted the challenge facing Washington: converting pressure into sustainable diplomatic outcomes.
The United Nations, established in the aftermath of the Second World War, remains the principal international forum where adversaries can confront their differences through dialogue rather than armed conflict. The Cuban delegation’s walkout demonstrated how quickly diplomatic exchanges can turn into open confrontation when rhetoric becomes particularly sharp.
Attention will now focus on whether the tough language heard at the General Assembly is followed by intensified diplomacy, particularly between Washington and Tehran.
With the Middle East already carrying the burden of years of conflict and instability, another major confrontation involving Iran could have consequences far beyond the region.
Trump’s UN appearance therefore delivered two messages simultaneously: America remains prepared to negotiate, but it is also prepared to exert substantial pressure if negotiations fail.
The critical question following his address is whether diplomacy will ultimately prevail over confrontation – particularly in dealing with Iran, where the difference between the two could determine not only the future of US-Iran relations but also the stability of the wider Middle East.

KARACHI: International crude oil prices fell sharply on Monday, with both Brent and US West Texas Intermediate (WTI) trading below the psychologically important $100-a-barrel mark during the session, as recovering Saudi oil shipments and hopes of diplomatic progress between the United States and Iran eased fears of prolonged disruption to global energy supplies.
Brent crude fell as low as $99.53 a barrel, its lowest level since September 9, while WTI dropped nearly five per cent to below $96 a barrel, marking a significant retreat from the elevated levels seen amid mounting tensions in the Middle East.
Later in Monday’s session, Brent recovered slightly above the $100 threshold. Reuters reported the November Brent contract at $100.39 a barrel, down $3.48 or 3.35 per cent, while the expiring October WTI contract was down $4.64, or 4.63 per cent, at $95.66 a barrel. The November WTI contract was even lower at $92.34.
The sharp decline has brought oil prices to their lowest levels in nearly two weeks and represents an important shift in market sentiment after fears of serious Middle Eastern supply disruptions had pushed crude prices sharply higher.
A major factor behind Monday’s decline was renewed optimism that diplomatic efforts surrounding this week’s United Nations General Assembly in New York could create an opening for negotiations over the Iran conflict.
US President Donald Trump has said he would be open to meeting Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian, who is expected to attend the UN gathering in New York. Iran has also reportedly communicated through intermediaries its conditions for re-engaging in negotiations.
Although no diplomatic breakthrough has yet been secured, the possibility of renewed engagement has been sufficient to reduce some of the geopolitical risk premium built into crude prices.
Markets have also been encouraged by the resilience of Saudi Arabian oil exports despite disruption to the Kingdom’s East-West pipeline.
Saudi Aramco has increased exports through the Strait of Hormuz after attacks on the East-West pipeline disrupted shipments through Yanbu on the Red Sea. Satellite data cited by JPMorgan showed Saudi oil moving through the Strait of Hormuz averaged approximately 2.9 million barrels per day over six days, compared with only about 700,000 barrels per day in August.
The ability of Saudi Arabia, one of the world’s biggest crude exporters, to reroute shipments has significantly reduced concerns that damage to energy infrastructure would immediately remove large volumes of oil from the international market.
The latest decline has occurred despite continuing security risks in the region. Yemen’s Iran-backed Houthis have continued attacks on Saudi targets, including energy infrastructure, while tensions surrounding strategic maritime routes remain elevated.
This means that the international oil market remains vulnerable to sudden reversals. Any fresh escalation affecting Saudi production facilities, the Strait of Hormuz or other critical shipping routes could quickly restore the geopolitical premium that has been removed from prices during recent sessions.
Nevertheless, Monday’s fall below $100 carries considerable significance for the global economy.
High oil prices increase transportation, industrial and agricultural costs and contribute to inflation across both developed and developing economies. A sustained decline in crude could therefore ease some of the inflationary pressure confronting governments and central banks.
For Pakistan, the development assumes particular importance because of the country’s heavy dependence on imported petroleum and other energy products.
A sustained fall in international crude prices could help reduce Pakistan’s oil import bill, ease demand for foreign exchange and provide support to the country’s external account. Lower international petroleum prices could also help contain domestic inflation by reducing pressures on transportation, electricity generation, agriculture and industrial production costs.
The extent to which Pakistani consumers benefit, however, will depend on the rupee-dollar exchange rate, international refined-product prices, freight costs, petroleum levy, taxation and the government’s fortnightly fuel-pricing mechanism.
The decline therefore offers potentially important economic breathing space for Pakistan, particularly if international prices remain below or around the $100 level for an extended period.
The immediate direction of the oil market will now depend heavily on developments at the UN General Assembly, prospects for US-Iran diplomatic engagement, Saudi Arabia’s progress in restoring affected infrastructure and the uninterrupted movement of crude through major shipping routes.
Monday’s sharp fall does not mean the Middle East energy crisis has ended. But the movement of both global benchmarks below $100 during trading sends an important signal: despite continuing geopolitical tensions, markets currently see a lower probability of an immediate and prolonged shortage of crude.
For oil-importing economies, including Pakistan, the critical question now is whether the break below $100 represents a temporary market correction-or the beginning of a more sustained retreat in global energy prices.
-importing economies, the continuation of this trend could offer valuable economic breathing space. But with geopolitical tensions still unresolved, the durability of the decline will depend less on market optimism and more on whether diplomacy succeeds in preventing another escalation and whether global oil supplies continue to reach consumers without serious disruption.

KARACHI: Frequent increases in fuel prices have triggered growing concern among consumers and businesses across Pakistan, with questions being raised over the government’s daily pricing mechanism at a time when international oil markets, despite an overall volatile trend, have also recorded declines on individual trading days.
The controversy has intensified as international crude prices declined more than once during the recent period, including falls in Brent crude on September 11 and September 16, while Pakistani consumers continued to face upward revisions in domestic petroleum prices during the broader period.
The situation has prompted a key question over the pricing formula: if increases in international petroleum prices are passed on rapidly to domestic consumers, how and when are declines in the global market reflected in retail prices in Pakistan?
Energy market observers point out that international crude prices are only one component of domestic petroleum pricing. Exchange-rate movements, freight, premiums, taxes, petroleum levy, dealer and marketing margins and the reference period used for international prices can all influence the final retail rate.
However, concerns persist over whether daily adjustments are appropriate for Pakistan, considering that petroleum products being sold at filling stations are not necessarily purchased from international markets on the same day.
Oil imported by Pakistan passes through a procurement and supply chain involving purchase contracts, shipping, port handling, refining or import of finished products, storage, transportation and distribution before reaching consumers.
This has strengthened calls for the government to reconsider the daily mechanism and examine a monthly pricing formula based more closely on actual procurement costs and an appropriate average of petroleum inventories.
Under such a mechanism, proponents argue, international increases comprising provinces with distinct social, cultural and regional circumstances, therefore appropriate representation of federating units was important in the judicial system as well.
He said amendments to the law had brought bar associations alongside bar councils within the scope of government support. The federal government had also increased grants allocated for bar councils and bar associations, he added.
The minister appreciated the Punjab government for increasing grants for bar councils and bar associations.
Referring to the Lawyers Protection Act, Senator Tarar said rules under the law had also been framed and effective implementation of the legislation remained among his priorities, with significant progress having been made in this regard.
The minister said the rapid expansion of private law colleges had created challenges and stressed the need to improve the quality of legal education and introduce an effective assessment system for entry into the legal profession.
He said the process of reforms in the legal sector had been initiated after 2015 and its impact would become more evident in the coming years.
Senator Tarar termed the increasing participation of women in the legal profession a positive development, saying women lawyers had become an important and active part of the legal community.
He urged lawyers not to allow political differences to overshadow their professional responsibilities, stressing that maintaining professional standards and dignity was a collective responsibility.
President Lahore High Court Bar Association, Rawalpindi Bench, Saeed Yousaf Khan, and Secretary General Qasim Mahmood Malik also addressed the ceremony.
Earlier, the minister was warmly received upon arrival at the Lahore High Court Bar, Rawalpindi. He also inaugurated two bar rooms at the association. -APP

KARACHI: Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Senator Mohammad Ishaq Dar on Saturday emphasized the need to further deepen the Pakistan-China All-Weather Strategic Cooperative Partnership, with greater focus on economic cooperation, connectivity and emerging areas of mutual interest.
He underscored the importance of expanding bilateral collaboration in trade and investment, the China-Pakistan Economic Corridor (CPEC), agriculture, science and technology, education and people-to-people exchanges.
The Deputy Prime Minister expressed these views during a meeting with Pakistan’s Ambassador-designate to China, Ambassador Ali Asad Gilani, who called on him ahead of assuming his diplomatic assignment in Beijing, according to the Foreign Office.
Dar congratulated Ambassador-designate Gilani on his appointment and reaffirmed the special importance Pakistan attaches to its time-tested and enduring relationship with China.
Pakistan and China enjoy a longstanding strategic partnership that has steadily expanded from close political and diplomatic coordination to extensive cooperation in economic development, infrastructure, energy, defence, regional connectivity and other sectors.
CPEC remains a flagship component of bilateral economic cooperation and has played a significant role in strengthening infrastructure and energy connectivity in Pakistan. Islamabad has been seeking to broaden the next phase of cooperation towards industrialisation, agriculture, information technology, mining and other areas capable of attracting investment and generating employment.
During the meeting, Dar highlighted the need to build upon the strong foundations of the relationship by opening new avenues for cooperation, particularly in sectors offering opportunities for economic growth and technological advancement.
Greater trade and investment cooperation is also expected to remain a key priority as Pakistan seeks increased Chinese investment and wider access for Pakistani products to the Chinese market.
Cooperation in agriculture, science and technology and education has increasingly emerged as an important dimension of bilateral relations, with both countries seeking to expand institutional partnerships, technology transfer, research collaboration and exchanges among students and professionals.
The Deputy Prime Minister also appreciated Ambassador-designate Gilani’s services as Additional Secretary (Asia Pacific) at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
He expressed confidence that Gilani’s diplomatic experience and understanding of regional affairs would contribute to further strengthening the enduring Pakistan-China partnership during his tenure in Beijing.
Dar wished the Ambassador-designate a successful tenure and underscored the importance of maintaining the momentum of high-level engagement between the two countries.
Pakistan has consistently described its friendship with China as a cornerstone of its foreign policy, while the two countries have repeatedly reaffirmed their commitment to strengthening their All-Weather Strategic Cooperative Partnership and advancing cooperation for shared development and regional prosperity.

KARACHI: The government has stepped up efforts to simplify business regulations, attract domestic and foreign investment and promote value-added exports as part of a broader strategy to strengthen Pakistan’s industrial base and improve its competitiveness in international markets.
Federal Minister for Board of Investment (BOI) Qaiser Ahmed Sheikh said the government was pursuing wide-ranging regulatory reforms to create a more investor-friendly business environment, acknowledging that Pakistan had remained behind several competing economies in simplifying procedures for businesses.
He said a Business Facilitation Centre had been established to assist investors, while foreign experts, including experts from the United States, were being engaged to help streamline regulatory procedures and remove unnecessary hurdles.
The government was also consulting relevant institutions to build consensus on proposed reforms and ensure their effective implementation, he said.
Qaiser stressed that improving the ease of doing business was essential to attracting investment and expanding Pakistan’s productive capacity. He said incentives, including duty-free or zero-rated machinery where applicable, were intended to reduce production costs, improve industrial competitiveness and encourage export-oriented manufacturing.
Referring to the economic transformation of Southeast Asian countries, the minister said domestic as well as foreign investment had played a major role in developing their industries and expanding value-added exports.
Pakistan, he said, needed to follow a similar approach by encouraging investment in industries capable of producing competitive goods for international markets rather than remaining dependent on low-value exports.
The minister said Pakistan’s economic zones offered significant opportunities for establishing new industries and could particularly attract overseas Pakistanis and foreign investors looking for long-term investment opportunities.
He said investment initiatives were also being pursued in coordination with the International Monetary Fund (IMF), while certain projects offered tax and other incentives to facilitate investors.
Highlighting improvements in the country’s macroeconomic indicators, Qaiser said the improvement in Pakistan’s sovereign credit ratings reflected progress in economic management and efforts to improve the investment climate.
He said the State Bank of Pakistan’s foreign exchange reserves had increased to around $18 billion, providing approximately three months of import cover.
However, the minister cautioned that renewed military confrontation between Iran and the United States was creating fresh economic challenges, particularly through rising international oil prices and higher energy costs.
As an energy-importing economy, Pakistan could face pressure from a prolonged increase in crude oil prices, which could affect production costs, inflation and the country’s import bill.
Qaiser said Pakistan maintained relations with both Iran and the United States and could play a constructive role in facilitating dialogue between the two sides. Islamabad, he said, supported diplomatic efforts aimed at resolving the dispute and preventing further escalation.
Recalling Pakistan’s historic role in facilitating contacts between the United States and China, the minister underlined the importance of diplomacy in promoting regional peace and global economic stability.
He also appreciated the military leadership’s support for diplomatic initiatives, stressing that peace and stability in the region remained essential not only for Pakistan but also for international trade, investment and economic growth.

The call for unity across the Muslim world has acquired renewed significance at a time when the Islamic Ummah is confronted by conflicts, geopolitical rivalries, economic pressures and persistent instability. In his message marking the birth anniversary of Prophet Mohammad (PBUH) and Islamic Unity Week, Leader of the Islamic Revolution Ayatollah Sayyid Mojtaba Hosseini Khamenei placed Muslim solidarity at the centre of his appeal, describing unity, friendship and cooperation as essential to the future strength and progress of Islamic societies.
The message is significant because it moves the discussion of unity beyond ceremonial expressions of fraternity. It presents solidarity as a strategic requirement for Muslim countries and societies. According to the Iranian Leader, the life and teachings of the Holy Prophet (PBUH) offer lessons not only in faith and spirituality but also in justice, honesty, dignity, knowledge, mercy, social ethics, brotherhood and unity. These principles remain deeply relevant to the political and social challenges confronting the Muslim world today.
Despite possessing enormous human, geographical, economic and natural resources, Muslim countries remain divided on many regional and international questions. Political disagreements, sectarian tensions, competing strategic interests and external rivalries have repeatedly prevented the Islamic world from transforming its collective potential into effective influence.
Ayatollah Khamenei’s warning against allowing differences to become instruments of division therefore deserves serious reflection. He argued that racial, cultural, social, economic, political and geographical differences can all be exploited to create discord within Islamic societies. Whatever one’s political perspective, history demonstrates that fragmented regions are more vulnerable to external pressure, conflict and instability than those capable of establishing mechanisms for dialogue and collective action.
The continuing Palestinian tragedy provides perhaps the most compelling illustration of this weakness. The Iranian Leader questioned whether Palestinians would have remained so vulnerable had Muslims acted with greater unity. The question extends beyond Palestine. From humanitarian crises and economic instability to security challenges and technological dependence, the Muslim world faces problems that individual states cannot always address effectively in isolation.
At the same time, unity should not be interpreted as political uniformity. The Muslim world encompasses diverse governments, cultures, schools of thought and national interests. Differences between states are inevitable and legitimate. Genuine unity therefore requires neither the abandonment of national sovereignty nor complete agreement on every geopolitical question. Rather, it requires the ability to prevent disagreements from becoming permanent hostility and to identify areas where common interests make cooperation possible.
This is particularly important when considering Ayatollah Khamenei’s criticism of the United States and Israel, which he described as opponents of Islamic unity. Such assertions reflect Iran’s established geopolitical perspective and will inevitably be viewed differently across Muslim capitals, many of which maintain varying strategic relationships with Washington and different approaches toward Israel. Yet these differences themselves demonstrate why intra-Muslim dialogue is essential. Islamic countries should be capable of determining their priorities through consultation and cooperation rather than allowing external rivalries to deepen internal divisions.
The most constructive element of the message is its emphasis on cooperation extending beyond politics. Ayatollah Khamenei identified security, wealth, science and progress among the areas where greater synergy among Muslims could produce meaningful results. This deserves particular attention.
The Muslim world needs stronger cooperation in education, scientific research, artificial intelligence, healthcare, food and energy security, trade, climate resilience and technological development. Greater economic integration, academic exchanges, joint research programmes and regional infrastructure could give practical meaning to the concept of Muslim solidarity. Unity becomes meaningful when it improves people’s lives.
Pakistan has an important role to play in such an endeavour. As a major Muslim country with longstanding relationships across the Middle East, Central Asia and the wider Islamic world, Pakistan has consistently advocated dialogue and peaceful resolution of disputes. Islamabad can continue encouraging bridges between Muslim states while maintaining constructive relations with the wider international community.
Islamic Unity Week should therefore serve as more than an annual commemoration. It should encourage serious introspection about why divisions continue to weaken societies that share so many historical, cultural and spiritual bonds.
The enduring message of the Holy Prophet (PBUH) provides a foundation of compassion, justice, brotherhood and human dignity. Translating those principles into contemporary international relations requires wisdom, tolerance and sustained cooperation.
At a moment of profound geopolitical uncertainty, Muslim countries have a choice: allow disagreements to define their relationships or build cooperation around their common interests. Unity does not require the disappearance of differences. It requires the maturity to manage them peacefully.
For the Islamic world, that may be one of the most important strategic lessons of our time.

KARACHI: Field Marshal Syed Asim Munir, Pakistan’s Chief of Army Staff, reached Tehran on Monday for high-level talks with senior Iranian officials as Pakistan intensifies its diplomatic efforts to promote peace and security amid continuing regional tensions.
Interior Minister Senator Syed Mohsin Raza Naqvi is accompanying the Field Marshal on the important visit.
According to a diplomatic source cited by Iran’s official news agency IRNA, Field Marshal Munir departed Islamabad for Tehran earlier on Monday and is scheduled to hold meetings with senior Iranian officials during his stay.
Iranian Foreign Ministry Spokesman Esmaeil Baqaei said on Sunday that the visit was aimed at strengthening bilateral cooperation between Iran and Pakistan and continuing Islamabad’s efforts to promote peace and security in the region.
The latest visit assumes particular significance amid Pakistan’s ongoing efforts to encourage dialogue and prevent further escalation in the region.
Field Marshal Munir has been playing a role in mediation efforts between Iran and the United States and has maintained high-level contacts with the Iranian leadership as part of Islamabad’s diplomatic engagement.
He earlier visited Tehran on April 15, 2026, to advance mediation efforts aimed at reducing tensions. He again travelled to the Iranian capital on May 22, where he held meetings with senior Iranian authorities, including President Masoud Pezeshkian.
The latest round of consultations is expected to focus on the prevailing regional situation, prospects for de-escalation and diplomatic engagement, as well as Pakistan-Iran bilateral relations.
Pakistan has consistently advocated dialogue and diplomacy as the preferred means of resolving regional disputes, warning that further military escalation could have serious consequences for peace, economic stability and security across the Middle East and neighbouring regions.
Islamabad and Tehran share longstanding political, cultural and economic relations, as well as a lengthy common border. Security cooperation, border management, counterterrorism, trade and regional connectivity remain important components of their bilateral relationship.
The presence of Interior Minister Mohsin Naqvi is also expected to provide an opportunity for discussions on security cooperation, border management and other matters of mutual concern.
The visit comes as Islamabad seeks to maintain close engagement with Tehran while using its relations with regional and international partners to encourage diplomatic solutions to ongoing tensions.
Observers believe Pakistan’s geographical position and its relations with Iran, the United States and key Gulf states provide Islamabad with an important opportunity to facilitate communication and support de-escalation.
Field Marshal Munir’s latest visit to Tehran represents another significant diplomatic engagement by Pakistan aimed at preventing further confrontation and creating space for dialogue at a critical juncture for regional peace and stability.

The Mecca Agreement between Pakistan, Saudi Arabia and Türkiye should not be viewed merely as another defence arrangement. If developed in the right direction, it could mark the beginning of a new era of collective defence, strategic autonomy and greater regional peace – perhaps the first drop of rain on the long-awaited road towards Muslim unity.
For decades, the Muslim world has possessed enormous natural resources, manpower, strategic geography and military capabilities, yet political divisions and the absence of a credible collective security mechanism have weakened its influence. The coming together of Pakistan, Saudi Arabia and Türkiye could begin transforming this historic weakness into collective strength.
The fundamental question is whether the Mecca Agreement can eventually evolve into a broader collective Muslim defence alliance – a potential “Muslim NATO” – where aggression against one member is regarded as a threat to all.
If Qatar, Kuwait, Bahrain, Egypt and other Muslim countries gradually join such a framework, a new strategic reality could emerge. Iran, too, could eventually become a member, strategic partner or supporter. Rather than permanently treating Tehran as a rival, efforts should be made to incorporate it into a broader regional security architecture. Lasting Middle Eastern peace will remain difficult without reconciliation between Iran and the Arab world.
Recent regional crises have raised an unavoidable question: Has the presence of foreign military forces really provided Gulf countries with a complete guarantee of their security?
If Muslim countries establish credible collective defence capabilities, they could gradually reduce excessive dependence on outside powers. The future of American military bases remains a sovereign matter between Washington and host governments, but an effective regional security arrangement could give Muslim states greater strategic independence. The objective should not be confrontation with America or any other power, but greater responsibility for their own security.
The strength of this emerging partnership lies in the complementary capabilities of its three countries. Saudi Arabia possesses immense economic strength, energy resources and a unique position in the Islamic world. Türkiye is a major military power with a rapidly expanding defence industry. Pakistan possesses highly experienced armed forces, sophisticated missile capabilities, strong air power and remains the world’s only Muslim-majority nuclear-armed state.
Together, these capabilities could create a formidable defensive shield whose purpose is not to start wars but to prevent them. Pakistan’s nuclear capability should not automatically be interpreted as a “nuclear umbrella” for others, but its military strength, technology, training and strategic experience would give considerable weight to a broader Muslim defence architecture.
The agreement also comes as India continues modernising its military capabilities through advanced combat aircraft, missile systems and other defence technologies. New Delhi will undoubtedly study the growing cooperation among Pakistan, Saudi Arabia and Türkiye closely.
Yet the message should remain clear: We seek aggression against no one, but aggression against a member should not leave that member isolated. This is the essence of deterrence – possessing sufficient strength not to wage war, but to make war less likely.
The unresolved Palestinian question and concerns over Israeli expansionism remain central to the Muslim world. Against fears surrounding the so-called “Greater Israel” concept, a coordinated Muslim diplomatic and security platform could assume considerable importance.
Divisions among Muslim states have weakened their collective influence on Palestine. Greater economic, diplomatic and strategic coordination would give them a stronger voice in defence of the legitimate rights of the Palestinian people.
Such an alliance, however, must never be defined by military power alone. Its real strength should come through joint diplomacy, economic cooperation, intelligence sharing, defence production, technological collaboration and conflict prevention.
Afghanistan’s future also lies not in confrontation with Pakistan or other neighbours, but in trade, connectivity and peaceful coexistence. A broader Muslim security system could offer Kabul opportunities, provided Afghan territory is not used for terrorism or destabilisation against neighbouring states.
The role of Field Marshal Syed Asim Munir in Pakistan’s expanding defence diplomacy and engagement with key Muslim countries also deserves attention. His efforts have helped place Pakistan at the centre of discussions on regional security and greater defence cooperation.
If these efforts help transform cooperation among Pakistan, Saudi Arabia and Türkiye into a wider architecture of Muslim peace and security, bring Arab countries and Iran closer, and prevent major regional conflicts, they would naturally command international recognition.
Should such initiatives achieve extraordinary success in preventing wars and establishing lasting peace, even consideration for international distinctions such as the Nobel Peace Prize may not be beyond imagination. Yet the greatest honour would not be an award, but the peace achieved and lives saved.
The Mecca Agreement must therefore not become another war bloc. It should evolve into a doctrine of strength for peace and deterrence through unity, protecting Muslim states’ sovereignty while contributing to regional stability.
The Muslim world already possesses resources, population, geography, capital, energy, military strength and technology. What it has too often lacked is unity, mutual confidence and a common strategic vision.
The Mecca Agreement should ultimately become an inclusive platform open to Qatar, Kuwait, Bahrain, Egypt and eventually Iran and the wider Muslim world.
Such an alliance should not exist against any nation; it should exist against war. It should not seek conquest, but defend sovereignty, security and future generations.
If that objective is achieved, history may remember the Mecca Agreement as the historic moment when the Muslim world took greater responsibility for its own security and future – and laid the foundations of a genuine “Muslim NATO.”

KARACHI: Prime Minister Muhammad Shehbaz Sharif has been urged to address the nation at the earliest opportunity to present a comprehensive roadmap for governance reforms, economic relief, and administrative restructuring, amid growing public demand for greater clarity on the government’s future policy direction.
The call comes at a time when Pakistan has achieved notable diplomatic and economic milestones over the past year. The country’s international standing has improved considerably, its sovereign credit outlook has strengthened, and renewed confidence from global partners has reflected positively on Pakistan’s economic prospects. Observers have attributed much of this progress to the coordinated efforts of Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif and Field Marshal Syed Asim Munir in advancing Pakistan’s diplomatic and economic objectives.
Despite these achievements, many analysts believe the country’s internal governance challenges require immediate and sustained attention.
An editorial published by The Financial Daily argues that while international recognition is encouraging, the next phase of national progress should focus on translating those gains into tangible benefits for ordinary Pakistanis. It notes that high fuel prices, expensive electricity, inflation, and the rising cost of living continue to place significant pressure on households and businesses.
According to the editorial, the Prime Minister’s address should reassure the public by presenting a clear strategy for improving governance, strengthening institutions, and accelerating administrative reforms. It also recommends that the government explain its approach to decentralisation and evaluate proposals aimed at improving public service delivery through more efficient administrative arrangements where appropriate.
The editorial further recommends that the government announce an immediate public relief package, beginning with meaningful reductions in petroleum prices and a long-term strategy to lower electricity and energy costs. It argues that affordable energy is essential for reviving industrial production, improving export competitiveness, attracting investment, and generating employment.
It also calls for stronger fiscal discipline within the government itself. Among the proposals are streamlining the federal cabinet, reviewing unnecessary ministries and public expenditure, and reducing official privileges and discretionary spending in order to demonstrate that the burden of economic reform is being shared by the leadership as well as the public.
The editorial maintains that visible austerity measures at the highest levels of government would strengthen public confidence and reinforce the message that national resources are being managed responsibly.
It further suggests that a direct address by the Prime Minister could help clarify the government’s priorities, communicate its reform agenda, and address uncertainty by providing a transparent vision for the country’s economic and administrative future.
According to the editorial, Pakistan’s recent diplomatic achievements provide an opportunity to launch a new phase of domestic reforms focused on good governance, institutional efficiency, and public welfare. It concludes that sustained economic progress will depend not only on macroeconomic stability but also on effective governance and policies that improve the daily lives of citizens.
The editorial emphasizes that a comprehensive national roadmap, communicated directly to the people, would demonstrate the government’s commitment to transparency, accountability, and long-term reform while reinforcing confidence in Pakistan’s future direction.
