KARACHI: In a groundbreaking display of solidarity and empathy for the visually impaired community, Khaas Foodz and Zaamin Group hosted an exclusive event, “Dining in the Dark,” in celebration of White Cane Safety Day 2024. This invite-only evening brought together diplomats, corporate elites, media personalities, and social leaders for a unique sensory experience that went beyond sight.

The event aimed to raise awareness about the challenges faced by blind individuals while empowering them through an immersive fine-dining experience. Guests, seated in complete darkness, relied solely on their other senses – taste, touch, and sound – to enjoy the exquisite cuisine prepared by a talented blind chef, enhancing their appreciation for the daily experiences of visually impaired individuals. The event was a powerful reminder of how small adjustments can foster deeper empathy and inclusivity in society.

Led by the founder of Khaas Foodz, the blind chef Fizza Hussain curated a menu that delighted the senses in innovative ways. With no reliance on visual cues, guests experienced the full range of flavors and textures in each dish, highlighting the remarkable abilities of the chef and other visually impaired individuals. Blindfolded with black stripes, the attendees embraced the darkness as they explored the extraordinary culinary creations using only their heightened senses of smell, taste, and touch.

Adding to the ambiance of the evening was a soul-stirring musical performance by Adnan Ahmed and Khalid M.K Anwer, whose talents resonated deeply with the audience. The performances brought a sense of emotional connection, reinforcing the idea that the visually impaired are not defined by their disabilities but by their immense potential.
Senior members of the Karachi Editors Club visited Central Jail Karachi during the reported week and observed various facilities provided to prisoners. These included basic education, language courses, arts classes, music classes, education of the Quran and Sunnah, fine arts, and other programs promoting religious harmony and freedom for all sects, including Sunni, Shia, Christians, Hindus, and others.
Despite limited resources, the prison staff is dedicated, hardworking, and diligent in serving the prisoners. Although the jail has a capacity for two and a half thousand prisoners, they are working on the rehabilitation and training of over seven thousand prisoners. Jail Superintendent DIG Abdul Karim Abbasi shared these views while speaking to a delegation led by Karachi Editors Club President Mubasher Mir and Secretary General Manzar Naqvi during their visit to the Central Jail. Other club members were also present.
During this special conversation with journalists, DIG Abdul Karim Abbasi emphasized that when work is viewed as worship, it can be performed excellently as it pleases Allah and His Messenger. He stated that enduring pain and hardship becomes easier when one is committed to their work. He highlighted that their efforts are not individual but are supported by the cooperation of the IG, DIG, and staff, enabling them to fulfill their duties effectively.
Abbasi mentioned that support comes not only from the Sindh government but also from philanthropists and various organizations. He noted that this historic jail, built in 1899, originally had a capacity of only two to three thousand prisoners.
The administration and prisoners face challenges, but they have an excellent kitchen that provides appropriate meals twice a day, along with breakfast that includes eggs and other items, arranged by the provincial government.
He pointed out the strict discipline in the jail, where every prisoner is engaged in their respective work, whether in worship or other activities. Abbasi hoped the visitors were satisfied with the environment they observed.
Earlier, Deputy Superintendent Muhammad Yousuf gave a detailed tour of the jail to journalists, briefing them about each department. He showcased beautiful handicrafts, women’s shoes, and purses made by prisoners, along with valuable paintings and calligraphy created by prisoners Ijaz and Aziz. Journalists were also shown departments where prisoners learn various languages, including Chinese and Arabic, as well as modern computer education. The exemplary facilities provided to prisoners include basic education, language classes, fine arts, paintings, and religious education.
Muhammad Yousuf expressed the desire for prisoners to utilize their time productively so that upon release, they focus on better livelihoods instead of crime. He emphasized the crucial role of family, parents, and teachers in preventing crime and highlighted the importance of young people’s actions in influencing their siblings. Understanding right from wrong and the impact of one’s actions on the family is essential.
He hoped the visit would send a positive message to young people, stressing the need to eliminate envy as it harms society. Yousuf lamented the decline in elders discouraging wrongdoing and called for good upbringing to eradicate street crimes. He underscored the preciousness of human life and the duty to protect it, as the loss of one life can devastate an entire family. The government plans to build more jails in different cities to reduce the burden on Central Jail, making it easier for prisoners to meet their relatives. Welfare organizations are assisting, and Yousuf hoped the visitors found the environment satisfactory. The delegation noted that the calligraphy and paintings on the jail walls significantly improved the environment, and they enjoyed a beautifully managed music session by the prisoners.

In the realm of exemplary service and unwavering commitment to humanity, Dr. Nasir Saleem Nasaka (D.A.M.S., M.D.A.M.(Gold Medalist), Ayurveda Charya deserves to be recognized with a Civil Award from the Government of Pakistan for his exceptional dedication and service to the field of healthcare.
Dr. Nasaka’s outstanding journey as Pakistan’s sole Ayurvedic practitioner spans over four decades, during which he has provided free medical care using Ayurvedic herbs. Having personally witnessed Dr. Nasaka’s commitment to providing free consultancy and medicines, it is evident that his resources are currently limited, restricting the number of patients he can reach. I urge philanthropists in Pakistan to come forward and support Dr. Nasaka in establishing a research institute along with a teaching hospital. This support could further extend to providing agricultural land, allowing him to grow the herbs needed for Ayurvedic medicines.
Dr. Nasaka envisions the establishment of the first-ever Ayurvedic Hospital, the first-ever research center for Ayurvedic Medication, and the first-ever agri-research center for herbs in Pakistan. As a dedicated medical professional, he not only treated patients but played a pivotal role in community health initiatives, extending his reach to the underprivileged and underserved areas of Pakistan. His tireless efforts have gone beyond the call of duty, reflecting a deep-rooted commitment to improving the overall well-being of society.
One of Dr. Nasaka’s most significant contributions lies in his efforts to advance healthcare accessibility. In a country where navigating healthcare infrastructure can be challenging, Dr. Nasaka has been a driving force in establishing clinics and medical facilities in different areas of Karachi. Through his visionary leadership, countless individuals who once lacked access to basic medical care now have a fighting chance against diseases and ailments.
Beyond healthcare, Dr. Nasaka has played a pivotal role in education and empowerment. Recognizing the correlation between education and societal progress, he has been instrumental in establishing schools and educational programs in underserved communities. His initiatives have empowered countless individuals, opening doors to a brighter future and breaking the cycle of poverty.
Moreover, Dr. Nasaka’s commitment to women’s empowerment deserves special mention. Through various initiatives, he has worked towards providing women with the tools and resources needed to excel in various fields. By advocating for gender equality and providing opportunities for skill development, he has contributed to building a more inclusive and progressive society.
Dr. Nasir Saleem Nasaka’s contributions to healthcare in Pakistan are exceptional and deserving of the highest recognition. I am optimistic that the Government of Pakistan will acknowledge his selfless service by awarding him a Civil Award. This recognition will not only honor Dr. Nasaka but also inspire others to contribute to the well-being of society in their respective fields.
Dr. Nasaka’s journey serves as a source of inspiration for aspiring healthcare professionals, philanthropists, and community leaders. His dedication to service transcends the boundaries of conventional roles, embodying the spirit of selflessness and compassion. Recognizing and honoring his contributions with a civil honor would not only be a tribute to his individual efforts but also a celebration of the values that define the nation.

During the reported week, TFD News, a YouTube channel affiliated with The Financial Daily, extended a heartfelt invitation to recognize and honour the exceptional courage of Muhammad Aamir Baladi. Adil Ashary from the USA, deeply moved by Aamir’s bravery, and graciously proposed a commendable reward of Rupees one hundred thousand as a token of appreciation.
This recognition not only pays tribute to Aamir’s heroic actions but also acknowledges the tremendous risks he undertook to save lives during a devastating fire that engulfed RJ Mall on Rashid Minhas Road in Karachi.
Aamir Baladi, a true hero and a dedicated employee at Media Pulse Advertising in Karachi, played a pivotal role in rescuing approximately 25 individuals during the fire at R.J. Shopping Mall near Dalmia. His extraordinary deeds caught the attention of Adil Ashary, a board member of The Financial Daily from the USA, who first learned of Amir’s heroism through the “Zra Hut Kay” program on Dawn News TV, hosted by Wusatullah Khan. In this program, Muhammad Aamir eloquently recounted the harrowing event, detailing how he successfully rescued people, including his own son Subhan, aged 21.
Amir’s distinction in acts of exceptional courage during the fire incident at RJ Mall was officially recognized in a Press release issued by Media Pulse. As flames rapidly consumed the upper floors of the Mall, trapping around 25 individuals, including Aamir’s son Abdul Subhan, the situation became dire. Subhan’s urgent call to his father seeking help set the stage for a remarkable display of heroism.
In response to the distress call, Aamir, an air-conditioner technician, not only alerted the fire brigade but also volunteered to unlock the lift, providing crucial access to the upper floors. Collaborating with a firefighter, Aamir ascended the fire brigade’s ladder, demonstrating remarkable composure as he quickly opened the lift door, breaking the glass with a hammer to facilitate a rapid and safe evacuation. Using an axe, Aamir and the firefighter skillfully breached the grill, executing a daring rescue mission that included saving a girl with the aid of a cutter.
Upon reaching the fourth floor, thick smoke enveloped their surroundings, intensifying the challenges of breathing and visibility. Undeterred by these perilous conditions, Aamir and his firefighting companion pressed on, guiding all the trapped individuals on that floor to safety through the same route they had used to access the building.
Reflecting on the ordeal, Aamir recounted the overwhelming smoke, even with protective masks. Despite initially encountering sealed routes in the chaotic situation, they demonstrated resilience, breaking through obstacles and leading everyone to safety outside the building.
In the midst of the chaos, Muhammad Aamir’s quick thinking and unwavering bravery emerged as a beacon of hope. His selfless and determined efforts to rescue those trapped inside the blazing building showcased an extraordinary level of courage. Despite the imminent danger from smoke and flames, Aamir’s resolve to save lives stood as a testament to his heroism, earning him well-deserved praise and admiration from both the local community and authorities. His actions serve as a poignant reminder of the extraordinary valor that ordinary individuals can display in times of crisis.
It is essential to note that the government has filed an FIR for the fire incident at Gulshan-e-Johar Shopping Mall, reporting 11 lives lost and five individuals sustaining injuries in this tragic event. The impact of Aamir’s courageous act resonates even more profoundly within the context of this heartbreaking loss, highlighting the crucial role played by individuals like him in the face of calamity.

Farrukh A. Khan, the Managing Director of the Pakistan Stock Exchange (PSX), and Raeda Latif, Head of Communication at PSX, hosted a breakfast meeting in the boardroom of PSX during the reported week, where they invited seniors from the journalist community for the briefing on “Online Only Broker”. This gathering served as a platform to unveil the groundbreaking nature of the Online Only Broker model, highlighting its adept use of technology to reshape the brokerage landscape. The approach, forward-looking in essence, not only streamlines processes but also introduces a cost-effective method for market participation, marking a significant leap forward in financial services.
During the PSX officials briefing on “Online Only Broker” on Thursday the KEC 100 Index crossed the 57,000 mark in trading activities. Participants and media representatives conveyed their congratulations to Farrukh and Raeda for this accomplishment. In response, the positive market reaction was attributed to the economic policies and reforms implemented by the caretaker government.
Further delving into the discussion on the Online Only Broker model during the briefing, Farrukh Khan emphasized its significance in the swiftly evolving financial markets. Distinguished by their fully digitized platforms, these brokers represent a paradigm shift in the provision of brokerage facilities. By exclusively operating through digital platforms, Online Only Brokers eliminate the need for physical offices, head offices, or branches, contributing to a more focused market approach. Notably, these brokers enjoy an exemption from the statutory audit requirement by an Auditor of category ‘A’ or ‘B,’ as outlined by the State Bank of Pakistan (SBP) Panel of Auditors.

Farrukh underscores the fact that customers engage with Online Only Brokers, exclusively through designated online channels, encompassing various facets such as account initiation, trading activities, and reporting. The trading procedures are executed seamlessly without human involvement, adhering to the stipulations outlined in Chapter 9 of the PSX Rule Book. Additionally, Online Only Brokers possess the flexibility to establish a Customer Facilitation Center (CFC) in accordance with the guidelines set forth in Chapter 22A of the PSX Rule Book. Notably, they are exempted from Clients’ Assets Segregation reporting, a mandatory requirement for other broker categories, both on a fortnightly and annual basis.
As the financial landscape undergoes continuous transformation, the Online Only Broker model emerges as a trailblazing force, epitomizing efficiency, technological prowess, and adaptability. Ongoing reforms and policies contribute to a positive market sentiment, laying the groundwork for a new era in financial services.
MD PSX has outlined the prerequisites for Online Only Brokers, emphasizing the imperative of acquiring a license from the Securities and Exchange Commission of Pakistan (SECP) and obtaining a Trading Right Entitlement Certificate (TRE) from PSX. Furthermore, these brokers are required to designate a Clearing Member, choosing between a PCM and T&C, and are restricted from partaking in proprietary trading activities. The maintenance of a robust system infrastructure is vital for their operational efficiency, encompassing a functional website, internal control procedures, and technology that supports Internet-Based Trading Services (IBTS). Adherence to well-defined procedures for client access to IBTS, covering crucial aspects like trading limits, order placement and execution, trade confirmation reporting, margin requirements, and margin calls, is deemed essential in accordance with Chapter 9 of the PSX Rule Book.
In terms of financial considerations, Online Only Brokers are subject to a one-time PSX Trading Right Entitlement (TRE) Certificate fee of Rs 1.25 million. They are obligated to uphold a minimum net worth of Rs 7.50 million consistently, with a Base Minimum Capital (BMC) of Rs1 million deposited with PSX. The licensing fees for SECP amount to Rs50,000, coupled with an annual renewal fee of Rs25,000. Details regarding trading and IT charges can be found in the Standard Schedule of Charges available on the PSX website.
During discussions with the senior media community, the PSX management underscored that the ongoing Investor Awareness initiatives and the introduction of innovative dimensions in stock market trading, such as Online-Only Brokers, will significantly contribute to bolstering investors’ confidence. This, in turn, is anticipated to stimulate increased trade volumes and foster the continued growth of the capital market.

The Karachi Editors Club orgainsed an interactive session with Dr. Hafiz Naeem-Ur-Rehman, Ameer Jamat-e-Islami Karachi, during the reported week. Colonel (Retd) Mukhtar Butt presided over the event, with Dr. Hafiz Naeem Ur Rehman gracing the occasion as the Chief Guest.
Driven by a commitment to secure basic rights for the citizens of Karachi, Dr. Hafiz Naeem-Ur-Rehman has been at the forefront of a relentless struggle. The city’s dire state, plagued by a lack of infrastructure, has persisted for nearly 15 years, with the ruling party the PPP in Sindh showing no interest in improving the conditions, destroyed all infrastructure of this city and seemingly embroiled in corruption across various sectors.
During this exclusive session, Dr. Hafiz Naeem-Ur-Rehman shed light on how the ruling party has employed various tactics to impede his efforts for the citizens of Karachi. Despite obtaining a clear mandate in the recent local elections, the leadership of the ruling party has seemingly chosen to nominate a Mayor with questionable intentions, further exacerbating the situation. Dr. Hafiz Naeem-Ur-Rehman emphasised the distressing absence of essential amenities for Karachi residents: potable water, sanitation facilities, gas connections, medical services, and overall relief measures. The issue of exorbitant electricity bills and frequent power outages has compounded the challenges faced by the city’s inhabitants.
Dr. Hafiz Naeem-Ur-Rehman voiced his intention to organize peaceful sit-ins in various sites if the situation does not improve promptly. In his address, he also unveiled his comprehensive plans for the city’s development, along with proposed solutions to address the myriad issues plaguing its citizens.
Mubasher Mir, President of the Karachi Editors Club, and Manzar Naqvi, Secretary General of the Club, also delivered their remarks during the event. They expressed the belief that granting the Jamat-e-Islami an opportunity to lead as Mayor could potentially foster an amicable resolution to the city’s public problems and concerns.

The Aga Khan University’s Medical College has been awarded the AMEE (Association for Medical Education Europe) 2023 Stellar Award at an award ceremony in Glasgow, United Kingdom.
The Stellar Award is presented to institutions who have won three ASPIRE-to-Excellence awards. AKU received the award for excellence in assessment and student engagement in 2013 and the award for curriculum development in 2022. This year, at the AMEE 2023 conference, AKU received the Stellar Award certificate on account of having won three consecutive awards with delegates from around the world in attendance. These awards, established in 2013, go beyond the traditional accreditation process and reward world-class excellence in education.
Over 50 global institutions have received ASPIRE-to-Excellence award(s), but AKU is only the third ever to get the Stellar Award for receiving recognition across three or more categories and the only one from Asia. The other two are from USA and UK.
“The award recognises AKU’ consistent commitment to excellence which is aligned with local health needs. Faculty development, a supportive learning environment for students, community outreach and utilization of technology are all integral components for the creation of a holistic, forward-looking and solution-based system of healthcare education,” said Dr Sadaf Khan, Associate Dean for Undergraduate Medical Education and Associate Professor of Surgery at AKU.
