The 14-year China’s resistance shaped victory in world anti-fascist war;

KARACHI: The Chinese Consulate General in Karachi on Tuesday hosted a symposium to commemorate the 80th anniversary of the victory of the Chinese People’s War of Resistance against Japanese Aggression and the World Anti-Fascist War. The event brought together leading diplomats, parliamentarians, academics, and representatives of trade and media bodies.
In his keynote address, Chinese Consul General Yang Yundong highlighted China’s decisive role in the global anti-fascist struggle. “China stood as a pillar in the main Eastern theatre, waging an unwavering 14-year fight and bearing half the burden of the global anti-fascist struggle,” he said. He recalled that China suffered more than 35 million military and civilian casualties and cited the Nanjing Massacre as one of the darkest chapters of Japanese atrocities. “Through bloodshed and relentless struggle, the Chinese people shattered Japan’s arrogant plan to ‘conquer China within three months’,” he noted, quoting U.S. President Franklin D. Roosevelt’s remark that without China’s resistance, Japan could have quickly advanced to Australia, India, and the Middle East.
Yang emphasized the pivotal role of the Communist Party of China (CPC), which united the nation under the National United Front and provided strong leadership that paved the way for ultimate victory. He added that since the founding of the People’s Republic of China in 1949, Beijing has continued to champion peace, becoming one of the largest contributors to UN peacekeeping operations and advancing initiatives such as the Global Development Initiative and the Global Security Initiative.
Touching on contemporary geopolitics, Yang reaffirmed that China remains committed to safeguarding the international order and promoting peaceful solutions to global conflicts. “As a permanent member of the UN Security Council, China has deployed over 50,000 peacekeepers in nearly 30 UN missions,” he said.
The Consul General underscored that the China-Pakistan partnership serves as a cornerstone of regional peace and prosperity. “China firmly supports Pakistan in safeguarding its sovereignty, combating terrorism, and playing a greater role in regional affairs,” he stressed. He also pointed out the significance of upgrading the China-Pakistan Economic Corridor (CPEC) to bring shared prosperity to South Asia.
Yang further recalled the historical support extended by Pakistan during China’s resistance against Japan, paying tribute to Quaid-i-Azam Muhammad Ali Jinnah’s condemnation of Japanese atrocities and to Pakistani laborers who facilitated wartime supply routes through Karachi and Peshawar.
On the subject of Japan, he warned against historical revisionism. “Certain forces in Japan still try to whitewash aggression and honor war criminals. Such actions challenge the UN Charter, the post-war international order, and human conscience,” he said. He stressed that the commemoration was not to perpetuate hatred but to draw lessons for a peaceful future.
Quoting President Xi Jinping, Yang reiterated that the most valuable lesson from the war is the commitment to peaceful development. “Today, the world is witnessing changes unseen in a century, making global unity and cooperation more essential than ever. China and Pakistan must work hand in hand to promote a multipolar, equal, and inclusive world order,” he concluded, with the slogans: “Long live China-Pakistan friendship! Long live world peace!”
Prominent speakers also addressed the gathering, including MNA Dr. Mirza Ikhtiar Baig, former Ambassador Syed Hassan Javed, Chairman National Management Consultant Dr. Junaid Ahmad, Prof. Dr. Muhammad Ali Shaikh, Secretary General Karachi Editors Club Manzar Naqvi, and Senior Vice President FPCCI Saquib Fayyaz Magon.
