KARACHI: Veteran politician and senior Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP) leader Agha Siraj Durrani, former speaker of the Provincial Assembly of Sindh, passed away in Karachi on Tuesday at the age of 72 after a prolonged illness.
Durrani had been receiving treatment at a private hospital in Karachi for several weeks after his health deteriorated due to kidney-related complications. Despite continued medical care, he breathed his last today.
Durrani’s Illness and Hospitalisation
According to family sources, Durrani’s condition worsened a month ago, prompting his transfer to Karachi for specialized treatment. Medical teams provided intensive care, but his health continued to decline.
Doctors confirmed he had been suffering from chronic kidney disease and was under constant medical supervision during his final weeks.
National Leadership Pays Tribute
President Asif Ali Zardari expressed deep grief over the death of Agha Siraj Durrani, paying rich tribute to his lifelong political and social contributions to Sindh.
“Agha Siraj Durrani dedicated his life to public service and played a vital role in strengthening democratic institutions in Sindh,” the president said in his condolence message.
Sindh Chief Minister Murad Ali Shah also expressed sorrow, calling Durrani a “sincere, loyal, and principled leader” who devoted his entire political career to the people of Sindh.
“He played an important role in strengthening the Sindh Assembly and deepening democracy in the province,” the CM said. “His services will always be remembered.”
Murad Ali Shah extended condolences to the bereaved family and prayed for their strength during this difficult time.
Agha Siraj Durrani — A Political Legacy
Born on October 5, 1953, in Shikarpur, Durrani received his early education at St. Patrick’s High School, Karachi and later obtained an LLB degree from Sindh Muslim Government Law College.
He rose through the ranks of the PPP to become one of its most senior leaders. As Speaker of the Sindh Assembly, he played a key role in strengthening provincial legislation and promoting democratic norms.
