Federal Secretary for Science and Technology Shahid Iqbal Baloch called for stronger international scientific cooperation, the Press Information Department said. He also urged evidence-based policymaking and sustainable resource management to address climate change, water scarcity, biodiversity loss and food insecurity.
Baloch addressed the inaugural session of the ANSO–COMSATS–TWAS International Conference in Islamabad. The gathering brought together scientists, researchers and international experts to support UNESCO’s International Decade of Sciences for Sustainable Development.
He urged support for science education and young researchers, alongside efforts to turn research into practical solutions. He also sought integrated management of water, energy, food systems and ecosystems. For Pakistan, he highlighted the need for stronger early-warning systems, renewable energy and climate-resilient agriculture.
Baloch said scientific evidence should guide government policies and development strategies, calling for closer cooperation among policymakers, researchers, academia and industry. He noted ongoing cooperation with China, Iran, Türkiye and the Republic of Korea in biotechnology and renewable energy.
