UN Reaffirms Position on Kashmir: Calls for Peaceful Resolution Under Charter

A United Nations spokesman said Wednesday that the world body’s position on Jammu and Kashmir remains “unchanged,” emphasizing that any resolution to the dispute must be reached through peaceful means in line with the UN Charter and with full respect for human rights.

“Our position on Kashmir remains unchanged,” said Farhan Aziz Haq, the UN’s deputy spokesperson, in response to queries about the deteriorating human rights situation in Kashmir following India’s annexation of occupied Kashmir on August 5, 2019.

Haq reiterated that the UN’s stance is guided by the Charter of the United Nations and relevant Security Council resolutions. He also referenced the 1972 Simla Agreement between India and Pakistan.

Pakistan recently marked the fifth anniversary of India revoking Jammu and Kashmir’s special status, which had granted the region a separate constitution and protections under Articles 370 and 35A of the Indian Constitution. India’s move was accompanied by a telecoms blackout, restrictions on movement, and a significant military presence.

Additionally, India has begun issuing domicile certificates to non-local Indians, allowing them to settle in occupied Kashmir and access residency rights, government jobs, and education scholarships previously reserved for Kashmiris.
