First Game of Thrones movie to bring Aegon I Targaryen’s conquest of Westeros to the big screen
Owen Harris to direct the fantasy epic, scheduled to hit theatres on June 6, 2029
Fans of Game of Thrones will have to wait a few more years for Westeros to arrive on the big screen, with the upcoming movie Game of Thrones: Aegon’s Conquest officially scheduled for release on June 6, 2029.
The film will mark the first theatrical movie set in the Game of Thrones universe, expanding the fantasy franchise beyond its television productions.
Owen Harris, who has worked on A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms, will direct the movie from a screenplay written by Beau Willimon.
Story of Aegon’s Conquest
While full plot details have yet to be revealed, the film is expected to explore the story of Aegon I Targaryen, founder of the Targaryen dynasty and the conqueror who brought much of Westeros under his rule.
Set several centuries before the events depicted in the original Game of Thrones series, the story will explore one of the most significant periods in the fictional history of Westeros.
Aegon I has yet to appear on screen in the franchise, and casting for the central role has not been announced.
His conquest established the Targaryen dynasty that would dominate Westeros for generations and eventually produce characters including Daenerys Targaryen, portrayed by Emilia Clarke in the original series.
Owen Harris to Direct
Harris serves as an executive producer on HBO’s A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms and has also directed episodes of the series.
His previous television credits include Black Mirror, the 2019 revival of The Twilight Zone and Brave New World.
Screenwriter Beau Willimon is known for creating and serving as showrunner of House of Cards and has also worked as a writer on Disney+’s Andor.
Westeros Universe Continues to Expand
Aegon’s Conquest will further expand the Game of Thrones franchise, which began with HBO’s adaptation of George R.R. Martin’s bestselling fantasy novels.
The original Game of Thrones ran for eight seasons from 2011 to 2019 and became one of HBO’s most prominent television productions.
The franchise subsequently explored the history of House Targaryen in House of the Dragon, while A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms focuses on another era in Westeros history.
