Rise in milk prices will severely impact household nutrition & affordability: PNDS

Staff Reporter

KARACHI: In Sindh province 48% of children are suffering from stunted growth, and any further rise in milk prices will severely impact household nutrition and affordability stated by the Pakistan Nutrition Dietitian Society in responding to the recent Press conference of Milk traders to increase per litre milk price.
Reliable sources have revealed that the Commissioner Karachi s office is allegedly colluding with the Dairy Farmers and Milk Sellers Associations to increase the price of raw milk from Rs. 220 to Rs. 300 per litre. Sources claim that the Commissioner has advised dairy groups to use media pressure to justify the price hike to resist public pressure.
Members of the Dairy & Cattle Farmers Association, during a press conference on Thursday held at Karachi Press Club, claimed that the recent floods in Punjab have made animal feed expensive, forcing them to raise milk prices. However, the Commissioner’s office has not yet issued any official notification regarding the increase.
Currently, the official milk price in Karachi remains Rs. 195 per litre, while in markets it’s being sold for Rs. 220 because there is no price controlling strategy designed by the Public servants.
Similar allegations were earlier made against former Commissioner Iftikhar Shallwani for favoring Dairy farmers Association’s inflated rates due to his favor.
Sources also allege that media representatives were favored by the milk mafia to portray them as victims, misleading the public narrative.
