KARACHI: President Karachi Editors Club (KEC) Mubasher Mir has warmly congratulated the governments of Pakistan and China on the historic establishment of the China-Pakistan Information Corridor (CPIC), describing it as a landmark achievement that will further strengthen the longstanding friendship, media cooperation, information exchange and people-to-people relations between the two countries.
In a congratulatory statement, Mubasher Mir extended his felicitations to Federal Minister for Information and Broadcasting Attaullah Tarar, Chinese Ambassador to Pakistan Jiang Zaidong, Chinese Foreign Ministry Spokesperson Mao Ning and all institutions involved in launching this important bilateral initiative in Islamabad on October 26, 2026.
He said the establishment of CPIC was particularly gratifying for the Karachi Editors Club, which had advocated a similar concept nearly seven years ago.
Recalling the historical background, Mubasher Mir said that on January 28, 2020, KEC hosted a welcome reception in honour of the newly appointed Chinese Consul General in Karachi, Li Bijian, during which Sarmad Ali, Managing Director of Jang and Geo Group and former President of the All Pakistan Newspapers Society (APNS), proposed the establishment of a China-Pakistan Media Corridor on behalf of the Club.
He said that although bureaucratic hurdles prevented the original proposal from materialising, KEC continued its efforts and subsequently established a 22-member Special Committee on Silk Road Media Corridor (SRMC) in January 2022.
The committee, comprising prominent journalists, scholars and media professionals from Pakistan and China, was formed under the leadership of KEC, with Secretary General Manzar Naqvi appointed as its Convener.
Mubasher Mir recalled that the then Director General Press Information Department (PID), Karachi, Irum Tanweer, attended the special KEC meeting as chief guest and formally presented the appointment letter to Manzar Naqvi.
He acknowledged that inadequate financial resources and limited institutional support prevented SRMC from achieving its full objectives, despite the commitment of its members.
“The establishment of the China-Pakistan Information Corridor is a welcome development and an important recognition of the growing significance of media diplomacy and information connectivity. The Karachi Editors Club takes pride in having advocated the need for a dedicated media cooperation platform between Pakistan and China several years ago,” Mubasher Mir said.
He emphasised that CPIC would complement the China-Pakistan Economic Corridor (CPEC) by creating stronger connections between journalists, researchers, business communities, cultural institutions and the peoples of both countries.
He expressed confidence that the new corridor would promote credible journalism, professional exchanges, joint research, technological cooperation and accurate reporting on the achievements and opportunities associated with bilateral relations.
The KEC President also expressed the hope that the authorities responsible for implementing CPIC would involve professional media organisations, including the Karachi Editors Club, to benefit from their experience and established networks.
He reaffirmed KEC’s willingness to contribute to the objectives of the new initiative through media exchanges, professional training, seminars, research and cooperation with Chinese media institutions.
Mubasher Mir concluded by expressing his best wishes for the successful implementation of CPIC, saying that the initiative would open a new chapter in Pakistan-China friendship and help strengthen bilateral relations for future generations.
