Pakistani actress Samiya Mumtaz has opened up about her unusual journey from theatre to farming, revealing that she acquired farmland at the age of 21 despite having no family background in agriculture.
Speaking in an interview, Mumtaz said she had been interested in farming from an early age, although both her parents were urban professionals with no direct connection to agriculture.
She recalled completing an internship in Gilgit, where she initially imagined she might settle permanently. However, after returning to Lahore and reconnecting with its culture and language, she decided to pursue farming alongside theatre.
Mumtaz said she initially lacked the financial resources to purchase land herself. She therefore approached a group of friends and family members with a proposal that they invest in land while she took responsibility for looking after it.
According to the actress, around seven or eight people joined the initiative, with some purchasing one acre and others two acres. Her uncle, cousin and aunt were among the family members who participated.
Mumtaz said the farming project initially appeared like a “castle in the air” because she did not own any land. A friend encouraged her to prepare a feasibility plan, helping turn the idea into a practical venture.
She revealed that she was only 21 when she eventually acquired land.
Her parents, however, had one condition: the land had to be close enough to home for her to drive back and spend the night at the family residence.
Mumtaz went on to pursue both farming and acting. She later established herself as a prominent Pakistani television and film performer while maintaining her connection with agriculture
