AGTHALA (Gujarat, India): Suzuki Motor Corporation, along with its wholly owned subsidiary Suzuki R&D Center India Pvt. Ltd. (SRDI), inaugurated the BANAS SUZUKI BIOGAS PLANT in Agthala, Banaskantha district, Gujarat, marking the company’s first-ever facility to produce and sell biogas (CBG) for CNG vehicles.
The opening ceremony, held at the Banas Dairy Sanadar Plant, was attended by Indian Home Minister Amit Shah, nine bipartisan parliamentarians, senior government officials, Shankar Chaudhary, Chairman of Banas Dairy and Speaker of the Gujarat Legislative Assembly, as well as senior Suzuki executives Koichi Suzuki and Kenichiro Toyofuku. An estimated 25,000 dairy farmers also joined the ceremony. Following the inaugural event, Minister Amit Shah and other dignitaries inspected the newly constructed biogas facility.
The biogas plant results from a September 2023 agreement signed between Suzuki, the National Dairy Development Board (NDDB), and Banas Dairy through SRDI. Construction has since progressed to completion, leading to operational readiness in December 2025.
The BANAS SUZUKI BIOGAS PLANT is designed to process up to 100 tons of cow dung daily, producing 1.5 tons of compressed biogas (CBG)-sufficient fuel for approximately 850 CNG vehicles per day based on Maruti Suzuki’s WagonR CNG fuel efficiency benchmarks. In addition to CBG, the plant will also produce and supply organic fertilizer, contributing to sustainable agriculture.
Suzuki President Toshihiro Suzuki hailed the inauguration as a transformative moment in the company’s sustainability roadmap.
“Suzuki’s first biogas plant has commenced operations. We are committed to achieving a carbon-neutral and recycling-based society by harnessing the rich resources found in rural India,” he said.
“This initiative, in partnership with India’s dairy cooperative sector, unlocks the immense potential of rural communities and contributes to regional prosperity. Under our corporate slogan ‘By Your Side,’ Suzuki will continue expanding its biogas business as India advances toward sustainable growth.”
The plant stands as a landmark collaboration between industrial innovation and India’s dairy ecosystem, reflecting Suzuki’s broader commitment to renewable energy, rural development, and carbon neutrality.
