KARACHI: Psychiatrists and mental health professionals in Karachi paid tribute to Dr. Chonni Lal, Head of the Department of Psychiatry at Jinnah Postgraduate Medical Centre (JPMC), for his courage and integrity in the Karsaz road accident case.
Professor Dr. Faraha Iqbal, Chairperson of the Department of Psychology at the University of Karachi, lauded Dr. Chunni Lal’s bold decision, saying it upheld the morale of the psychiatric community and set a powerful example of honesty and professionalism for young psychiatrists.
She expressed these views while addressing an awareness seminar marking World Mental Health Day, organized by Jinnah Sindh Medical University (JSMU) on Wednesday in Karachi.
Dr. Iqbal said that Dr. Chunni Lal’s name came into the spotlight after the tragic Karsaz accident, in which Natasha Danish, wife of prominent businessman Danish Iqbal, was involved in the deaths of Amina Arif and her father. Dr. Lal’s firm stance on Natasha Danish’s mental health played a pivotal role in ensuring justice for the victims’ family, despite pressure from influential business circles attempting to distort the facts.
Speakers at the seminar emphasized the importance of community engagement, mindfulness, stress reduction, and professional development in strengthening mental health resilience.
Earlier, the event began with a recitation from the Holy Quran and the National Anthem, hosted by Dr. Syeda Eisha-tir-Radia and Dr. Roshan Aara. Professor Dr. Chooni Lal, Head of the Department, welcomed the audience and emphasized the importance of resilience and compassion in mental health care during crises.
A thematic talk by Dr. Anil Wadhwani shed light on the psychological challenges faced during disasters and the need for accessible services. The gathering was graced by Dr. Amjad Siraj Memon (VC, JSMU), Dr. Ajmal Kazmi, Prof. Dr. Iqbal Afridi, Prof. Dr. Zafar Haider, Brig. Shoaib, Dr. Sohail, Prof. Washdev, Dr. Shifa Naeem, Dr. Imran Jofa, Dr. Farah Iqbal, Dr. Azam Khan (Registrar, JSMU), and many other distinguished psychiatrists and psychologists.
A powerful Monologue Segment followed, featuring residents Dr. Shiraz, Dr. Maham, and Dr. Adina, who performed expressive pieces on Iztirab (Anxiety), Burnout, and Resilience. Adding a poetic touch, Dr. Abdul Qadir presented “Sukoon Ki Talash Mein,” an inspiring Urdu poem on healing and hope.
Insightful sessions by Dr. Ali Imran on AI in mental health counseling and Ms. Fatima Batool on occupational therapy in rehabilitation added modern perspectives.
The ceremony concluded with Prof. Dr. Chooni Lal presenting bouquets and ajraks as mementos to the guests, followed by a visit to the Department of Psychiatry where refreshments were served.
The event beautifully captured JPMC’s ongoing commitment to mental health advocacy, accessibility, and collective resilience.
